Armando Galarraga's perfect game broken up with 2 outs in the 9th

digicatdigicat Posts: 8,551 ✭✭
Detroit's Armando Galarraga had perfect game going with 2 outs in the 9th, when Jason Donald reached base on an infield "hit", according to umpire Jim Joyce. The next guy grounded out to end the game, and give Galarraga a 1 hit shutout.

SOOOOO CLOSE!!!!

Clearly out by a full step. Shame on the umpire missing a call that wasnt that close.
  • What a screw job by the ump!! Un-freekin believable!!!

This is gonna be the cause for replay. He was out by a mile. I'm sure ESPN will be all over this one.

I guess the umpires decided that the perfect game quota has been met for this year.

Umps are a complete joke now a days. As lame as it sounds, it's gonna suck for that ump to live with that guilt on him for a little while.

Meanwhile, the Rays just tied the game up against the Blue Jays...then the 3rd base ump said Sean Rodriguez didn't touch 3rd. Upon further review Rodriguez touched 3rd TWICE...

WORST CALL I've ever seen in baseball. Joyce should be suspended for such a grossly incompetent call with such huge implications attached. Clearly the runner was out by at least a half step if not more. That Joyce could not position himself to ensure he didn't miss the call is unforgiveable. Galarraga to his credit, took it like a man and merely smiled in disbelief.

I hope Joyce is booed at every game he umpires from now until he retires. Not even close Jim, not even close...and you screwed a guy out of a perfect game. What a shame!!!

If that's the worst call you have ever seen, you must be quite young. I'm sure Cardinal fans can think of a worse one.

Agreed. The Jorge Orta safe call had to have been the worst in MLB history.

I agree it was a horrible call, but I think I feel worse for the umpire than I do Galaragga.

The umpire's legacy is going to be this botched call, and not all of the good work he has done in the past.

The replay kept focusing on the G beating the runner to the bag, which he clearly did, but the ball was not fielded cleanly...I agree the ump should have gave G the benefit of the doubt (similar to the "in the area" understanding on a force out at second) but in no way shape or form is this play close to being the worst call in baseball history.

  • Props to the ump for admitting he made the wrong call, and props to the pitcher to take this all so well.

  • While Joyce manned up and admitted his mistake, both Leyland and Galarraga expressed empathy for the umpire's plight. Leyland talked about the "human element" being such a wonderful part of baseball, and he called it correctly when he said no one is going to wake up Thursday morning feeling worse than Jim Joyce.

You just have to laugh at people who want Jim Joyce's head over this.
  • too bad for the Tigers.

It's a little counter-intuitive, but IMO only a good umpire would have the balls to call the runner safe on a bang-bang play like that. 99% of umps would take the easy road, and call the guy out, even if they thought he was safe. And if a bad ump did make a mistake, they would have compounded that mistake by throwing Cabrera out of the game for arguing during the next at-bat.

What I can't believe was how awful I felt after seeing that play. There have been tough Boston-team losses that I've taken better than that.

League office should intervene to reverse the call, or at least to allow a perfect game into the record books. May be unprecedented, but time to think outside the box here.

This is the 21st century - it would be a good time to consider instant replay for any play at the umpire's discretion, as in other major sports.

While i would love the call reversed, what precedent would that set?? Next time a team cries foul and says the ump screwed us out of our big inning, the game gets replayed??? There is something to be said about the human element, for better or worse.... In baseball, calls need to be made ON THE SPOT so the rest of the play can be sought thru.... otherwise you get "oh, this happened, so the guy could have kept on running" or "that happened, and he would have been tagged out"..... ifs, ands and buts prevent (and SHOULD prevent) instant replay..... all that said- Congrats Armando on your El Perfecto!!!! This is the most press the Tigers have gotten since 1984.... a shame
  • The official scorer is looking at changing the call from a hit to an error. A replay may show that the pitcher didn't catch the ball cleanly
in his glove. Foxnews had the story.

Error would be logical if the ump made the safe call based on the bobble.

He did not make the safe call based on a bobble. Joyce said so himself. To rule this play a error would be a worse mistake than correcting the call IMO.

I read that the official scorer is adamant about not changing his call to an error because, in his view the ball was fielded cleanly by Cabrera and Galarraga made the catch and touched 1B.

My question is, if MLB overturns the call and gives Galarraga the perfect game, do they just erase the 28th at bat from the box score? Or will this end up being a *perfect game*?

By nature of what happened, and with the umpire admitting that he blew the call, I think that it already is a *perfect game* in the history books.

Not to change the subject slightly, but did anyone notice the game lasted all of 1 hr and 44 mins?

He would have to be a bigger idiot than he already is to do so. Galaraga will be remembered fondly for the class he showed. Unfortunately his demonstrated class under incredibly trying circumstances is even more rare than a perfect game.

What a horrible day yesterday for the umps. In addition the perfect game, the baserunning in the Tampa game, to close the evening on the west coast they blew a call at second with two outs in the bottom of the tenth allowing the Ms to get a win vs. the Twins. The runner was just as out as the guy in the perfect game.
  • I blame this all on Jason Donald, for running to fast.
