Mike Schmidt retired the same way, in the middle of the season, so based on reading many stories about why Mike did it, I may understand why Griffey did it, and Schmidt was playing much better than Griffey at the time. Basically, Schmidt didn't need the money and felt that if he couldn't perform at an All Star level, he didn't want to be out there anymore...with other reasons as well.

Hats off to Griffey and his great first ballot Hall of Fame career.

That's exactly what Chipper said at the beginning of the year when he had gotten off to a really slow start this year. These guys perform at such a high level for so long and the second they drop to mediocrity it becomes depressing to the point where they don't even want to do it anymore. That competitive nature is amazing, and pretty admirable.

Sad to see Jr. go, but he hasn't been the same in years. What a player he was during his prime and God only knows how many records he would have broken if he stayed healthy. Hopefully he stays in baseball.
