1938 Horrors of War

Anyone putting a set together of these cards? I bought some lots, and have some interest in trying to piece together a PSA 3 - 4 range set. One specific question, one card in the lots shows it was printed in Canada, and has a different colored back, font and #ing. Any idea on the print run of the Canadian version vs. U.S. printing?

No clue about the Canadian print run vs. US, but they are some sweet cards.

I took a liking to them after reading the article in the SMR.

Same here. The lots I bought included #1, which is just a sweet card. Condition is about a 3, and I was happy with it, so that is my grade goal.

This is the Canadian counterpart to the first 72 cards of the U.S. Gum, Incorporated set. Advertised as containing 240 total cards on the wrapper, this set fell well-short of those aspirations. Printed on some the thickest gray card stock of any gum card of the era, fronts depict the same artwork as the U.S. set except that the last twenty-four cards are mirror images (and extremely scarce). The fact that the print run of the cards of this set represent only a small fraction of their heralded U.S. counterpart keeps these cards very much in demand. The statement that best reflects this set’s true scarcity is that if one were in a race to build both a Canadian and U.S. set, it wouldn’t be that you could finish the U.S. first, but how many U.S. sets could be built before completing the Canadian. Good luck on building the US set, The Hitler cards are going to be a bear as well.
