Anyone here in for the Goldberg's sale?

I'm not sure that my pocket can take it image , but I still hope to acquire something image ! I guess that now is a really good time to start slabbing my dupes and inventorying the accumulation that is outside of my two core collections for transition to the next owners image .

Edited for spell check.

I've got a couple of strong bids in, but with the VIcky material I'm probably well out of the chase.

Ira and Larry Goldberg run an auction company that usually has 1-2 really good sales of world coins every year.

A few pieces, I wonder how pricing will behave at this mid-year auction point, with a lower Euro.

    Linkified

I expect prices will be like the past couple of auctions, very strong prices for high grade 19th & 20th C. for the registry sets. Luckily I can wait it out as a couple of the sets I am working on aren't registry sets.

Also just got back from 1/2 price books, they have a 20% off sale today so I got the 5th edition of Unusual World Coins, new, for $17.95.

Nver mind, figured it out. That format is both cool yet annoying at the same time.

Not easy to navigate. I would say the Stack's website is the worst around. This one comes second unless you bid throug icollector.com

Can anyone register and bid or is it too late if youve never signed up there before? Is payment due on the spot or can you mail a check/mo and how soon?

The stuff I would have been interested is sexed up in plastic tombs, overgraded, and likely cleaned and retoned.

I'm at the sale. They're running 2-3 hours behind schedule. It's going to be a very late night. I am not amused.

Isn't that par for the course at Goldberg?

I never understood why the West Coast auctions cannot be scheduled for earlier in the day so the East Coast/European bidders can bid real-time in the live auction. I was at one world coin auction that Heritage did at the LB show that went till something like 1:00 AM Pacific time.

I cant see me staying up for the items given the current significant delay. A shame to have such auction material go to waste.

I smell lawsuit by the consignors.

Doubtful since it's probably not specified as to the time of sale in the auction contract.

I just don't understand why the Goldbergs consistently do this. They are otherwise master marketers.

Edited to add: Maybe they just don't "get" the whole live Internet auction thing.

Thank you Andy! I stretched further than anticipated although, I won the only lot I was represented on, # 2651. The 1779 Potosi Bolivia 8 Escudo, NGC 63 is quite possibly, the finest for the type and a rare date to boot. Tomorrow is Silver day!

Thanks everyone! I'm VERY happy with this win and my other, the 1630 8 Reales Royal of Potosi (Bolivia). This ultra rare piece is the first dated Royal for all South America. A very important coin! image Now, I just have to pay for the darned things! There's ALWAYS a spoiler!

Now, if someone wants to post pics of this one?!? image

    Hi Zohar,

Just imagine how I felt after winning it. My heart almost DID stop for that moment. I thought, 'What was I thinking?' I guess that my spending will slow down for a bit, maybe MORE than a bit! image

This has got to be the best 8 escudos that I've ever seen. Their usual poor state, despite rarity has been a constant turnoff for a shallow collector such as myself. Congrats! image
