Famous Baseball Quote Needed

I'm trying to find a baseball quote by a French philosopher by the name of Voltaire. I've done Google and Ask.com searches and can't find any sites that have this quote. It goes something like: "Those who wish to know the heart of America, need to know baseball."

Can anyone help me out with the exact wording of this quote and what the source was? Thanks in advance for any replies!

  • Wasn't the philosopher Voltaire a little ahead of baseball? Like 100+ years?
  • Yes, you are indeed correct - it wasn't Voltaire. But I'm pretty certain the quote was made by some famous foreign philosopher. Any thoughts?

“Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball, the rules and realities of the game and do it by watching first some high-school or small-town teams” Jacques Barzun
  • I just recently heard it on an episode of The Golden Age of Baseball showing on FSN channels in the last 2 weeks or so but cannot remember who it was attributed to, sorry.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again ---Terence Mann

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."
