So I shipped a very expensive coin to PCGS on the 26th via Registered mail and...

It's still listed simply as "Acceptance"

"Your item was accepted at 10:10 AM on May 26, 2010"

I know Registered is slow, but shouldn't I have seen some sort of update by now?

Thanks!

    No. Update when delivered.

they don't update registered numbers like they do other stuff. although, I have had some experiences where they have. Mostly, not for me though.

I generally slap a del. conf. label on there so I can get better tracking.

Intermediate tracking is not displayed on the USPS website for Registered. It is sometimes displayed for priority and first class if you have a delivery or signature confirmation number but not consistently. In fact, they don't always scan on acceptance. Express mail is fully tracked. BTW, if "very expensive" to you means less than $5000, express mail is about the same price and much cheaper but the insurance limit is $5k. I believe you're talking about your R5 large cent so it was probably closer to the $25K insurance limit on registered mail. --Jerry

My understanding is that Registered mail doesn't get updated until delivery since they do not want folks to know where it is in transit for security.

You might check your credit card to see if it has been billed by PCGS.
That's how I make sure NGC gets my subs.

Did the show improve for you Saturday??

Registered Mail is taking a much longer trip these days. The PO has cut back a bunch and Reg. Mail is low man on the totem pole as far as priorities go. Service varies depending on how much any POs in the chain of your delivery have cut back. I've got a real logjam somewhere in my chain - my last two Reg Mail deliveries have taken 15 and 22 days to get to me.

sending registered from FL to CA, set yourself up for 2 weeks of anguish

although generally a very safe method, hard to place value on submission
    and expensive to pay insurance

I sent my quarterly submission Registered on the 15th and it was received by PCGS on the 25th. Status is still listed as OK on their site.

I just sent 2 boxes, each with 40 coins in it from CA to FL and it took about 4 - 5 days. Registered seems quick right now...

FYI--Registered just took me 2 weeks from Missouri to PCGS. It actually sat at USPS for a couple of days before PCGS signed for it.

The downside of registered is that you have no idea how long it will take, and won't have any idea if it got there safely until it actually does. That seems kind of old fashioned, to me.

I just priced sending a 10 ounce package by Express, insured for $5000, cost is $40.

Registered mail using the small flat rate box, insured for $5000, cost is $25.

  • I recently sent two packages from Florida to PCGS by Registered Mail. Both were mailed together, but one took 13 days, the other 15 days, and tracking was not updated until they arrived.

Have some patience. It will take a few days to get to PCGS.

Tracking is not offered on registered mail.

I've used Registered Mail before and was aware of this. I was just trying to let the OP know his experience was not a cause for concern, not intending to imply the post office didn't do something they should have done.

    Fair enough.

The reason I posted is that there are regular comments here complaining about the lack of tracking for registered mail (not that I'm saying your post was a complaint), and I think it is kind of unfair to criticize the post office for not providing a service they never claimed to provide in the first place.

I agree 100% with you on that. Maybe I've been lucky but so far every package I have mailed has made it intact to the destination. The manager at my local post office goes out of his way to help his customers. Recently he let me use his paper Registered Mail tape to wrap the two packages I mentioned. He even gave me some extra to take home with me since I have been unable to find it for sale in my area. I have no complaints.

Edited just to add that I should have explained my first comment. I can see how it could have been taken as a complaint.

On a shipment I sent the other day, I forgot to list a 1915 $1 Gold Pan Pac on the submission form, though I distinctly remember having it in the mylar flip and blue box, it's not on my gold copy image
Yesterday the gentleman who owns the coin came into the shop and I had to tell him of this oversight. I'm feeling a bit stupid today. I hope it gets there and will call customer service after the weekend to put a track on submission # ______________. image

Registered mail is itself an anachronism. Old fashioned taping and hand labeling in the computer age--I've been saying for years that it won't last much longer. --Jerry
