Ok, so I just started playing here about two weeks ago or so. I finally uploaded two coins into my first Registry Set....and even uploaded photos along with them. Keyman Mercs Holey Cow! I have done a lot of photography in my time and I have to say that Coin Photography is pretty tough....I know what I will try different next time. Hopefully through a little experience I will get better.
Anyway......Some people expressed interest in seeing Varieties that are NOT in the Registry. So here ya go.
1942 DDO - There is doubling in the DATE, LIBERTY and MOTTO
This coin is RAW and I am guessing it is about VF-35. Beyond the normal difficulties, I had a tougher time photographing this one.
1943-D DDO MS67 FSB (ANACS) - There is doubling in the DATE, LIBERTY and MOTTO
1943-D DDO MS65 FSB (RAW) - There is doubling in the DATE, LIBERTY and MOTTO
Yes, I am fortunate enough to own two of these.
I also have a 1944-D DDO MS65 FSB (RAW) but I have not photographed it yet. The doubling is seen in the DATE, LIBERTY and MOTTO but is less dramatic than the coins above. I hope to find the energy to photograph it and others soon.
I hope everyone is having a good weekend.

I don't know about the middle coin, but the first and last look like machine doubling to me. Maybe some others will chime in and give their opinoins.

Because of the lighting the middle one is hard to tell...just look at the giant split in the middle of the "3"....it comes to two points instead of one. ANACS seemed to like it for a DDO. The other 1943-D is the same believe it or not.
What is machine doubling? I have to go look that up...what is the difference? For a real "DOUBLED DIE", are you saying a SMURF or MAGIC FAIRY made those happen rather than a machine with dies, hubs, planchets and whatever the other parts are? Aren't machines involved with DOUBLED DIES? I am just not familiar with the terminology and differences.
Thanks for the education, I could use it.

A real double die is a die that has doubling cut into it, so it produces coins with that doubling.
Machine doubling is a regular die that bounces and hits the planchet more than once and causes what you are seeing in the 43-D.
It is sometimes refered to a shelf doubling or strike doubling or machine doubling. This is discussed in quite a few books on coin errors.
I have a mini collection of these, probably 20-30 coins.

Wow, you have 20-30! Cool, thanks. Ok, so now I understand the difference of how the two are made but how can you tell the difference when looking at a coin? In the population over at ANACS they do list the 1942 DDO and of course I have the 1943-D DDO slabbed by them. Does ANACS maybe not differenciate between Doubled Dies and Machine Doubling? I realize ANACS isn't PCGS but they have more experience than me and they seem to think the 1943-D is a DDO.
Also, if a machine malfunctioned once or twice and caused machine doubling....I can undersatnd that but how would I have TWO of the 1943-D ....wouldn't that be an indicator that maybe it was caused by a doubled die and multiple were struck the same way with that doubled die? Or I guess a machine could be malfunctioning and striking planchets twice for a long time before being noticed as well?

Nice photo!
Take a look at my variety page. You will find some true doubled dies there.
