Observation on Toning and Albums

This is not very scientific but I noticed on my Danscos that if the plastic sleeve was not inserted so all the coins were completely covered (sometimes they go in a little crooked), the coin that had some exposure to the air toned while the other covered coins did not. Some of these I have had in albums for 15 years and the edge toning was only on the one exposed to air. If I'm the last to know it won't be the first time.

Interesting. I bought a SLQ set in one the older blue Whitman albums that the plastic sleeves didn't fit quite right in some of the rows, so that where there were little gaps at the top (or bottom) of the coin, the toning was heaviest there.
I've yet to see a pattern on how coins tone in Dansco albums. I bought a BU Roosy set that had been assembled maybe 5 years ago, that had a number of nicely toned coins in it, the majority of which were the dimes housed along the outside edge of the pages, and yes the heaviest toning was on the edges of coins closest to the 'air'.
My Dansco set for the most part was assembled in the mid 80's to mid 90's. None of these have air exposure from the plastic sleeves. Most of the seated coins have toned up quite nicely. The peace dollar, commens, frankie, roosy, washie, etc have not toned at all. But last week or so, coinsarefun (Stefanie) posted some beautiful modern toners from her 7070 set that had only been in there ~3 years. Variations in the manufacture of the pages, the environment the album is stored in, and surfaces of the coins when placed I guess all come into play.

Are you not using the Dansco "Silver-Guard" slipcases ?
