LSRC Nashville Whitman report..yes a bit late !

I decided to go to the Nashville show because my old Partner Steve, of PQdollars invited me.
We always have a great time at shows, and I wanted to see the sights of a new town. And we did
I knew going in that because of the recent floods, and other reasons like another show just a short distance from this one...that there may not be much public there, but wanted to give it a try anyway.
Until my new website is fully up and running,I am selling 90% wholesale anyway.
My flight out of L.A. was delayed,so my day didn't start off right.
When I got to Chicago,I rushed to the connecting gate to see another delay. 50 more minutes in an airport.
I felt bad for Steve, because he was waiting for me to have dinner.
I finally got to the hotel room about 11pm,and we were both ok with not eating.
I know I can miss a meal once in a while without it hurting me
I spend delays in airports etc. working on my website, and searching other coin sites for cool newps,as I never like wasting time.
Once at the show,I did my usual trading with other dealers before I setup at my table.
When the public was let in,both of them
well..there were more than 2,but not hundreds like the old days before the internet.
I had one nice sale at the table..4 nice morgans, and that was about it.
Instead of sitting at the table for 3 days waiting for magic to happen,I started walking coins.
I would buy from one dealer, and sell it to the next.
I just can't sit and do nothing.
I was called back to my table to view coins for sale from a customer who asked for me.
He had 13 nice coins for sale that he tried to sell back to the dealer who sold them to him,but was told that he didn't have enough money to buy them back.
After about 30 minutes,I owned 13 coins that another dealer lost out on..His loss,my gain.
Back to the floor trying to sell, and buy cool coins at my prices.
One thing about a slow show is that some dealers need to sell, and will take offers on what they have just to get cash flow.
I have to say,I bought some great coins,at my prices,so I was very happy.
I bought 3 cent silvers, seated dimes, barbers, morgans ,peace and many more.
I have to say that I bought my way out of this show. Buying is just as good as selling if you have customers for cool coins.
I have already sold 21 of my newps to want list customers.
I have to make an observation on how most dealers look at tables when they walk the floor.
I have seen this for years, but since I had so much time to watch at this show,I noticed it alot more.
Here is my take on many dealers when walking the floor.
Dealer starts at 1st row,and walks by each table taking a 10 second glance..sees nothing, and goes to the next table.
This goes on for row after row.
I see written in other dealer's reports that they found nothing at the show.
Here is me walking the floor.
I start at the 1st table, and look at every coin in the cases to see if they have type, walkers, morgans,or peace dollars.
If,they have even one coin that I do,I sit down and take a closer look.
That way I can really have a good look, and also ask what do they have that is not on the table..sometimes many double row boxes come out,and I find cool coins.
By taking my time, and not just looking for a monster coin that attracts my attention,I find many cool coins that other dealers that are in a hurry miss.
When walking the floor, either as a dealer,or a collector, you have to slow down.
You may not get to view every table, but you won't miss anything either !
Two of my 4 "stealth " floor walking dealers were there, and also sold some coins for me.
I did talk to collectors that were walking the floor, and asked them how they were doing..2 of them said they didn't even know about the show until the last day...Something is wrong when locals don't see ads in the papers and can't even plan for a show that is in their backyard.
On my plane out ,while waiting in line for the restroom, one passenger saw me with a PCGS shirt on,and asked me if I worked for them.
I said no,and told him I was just at a show in Nashville.
He was pretty upset that he lives in Nashville, and didn't even know about the show.
I did give him my card, and may have a new customer.
All in all I made it a pretty good show.
Now I am way behind sorting coins, and getting them all stickered.
Long Beach is next, and I hope to do better with the public, and as usual with other dealers.
Thanks for reading,
Larry

You mentioned the lack of awareness of the show, I think that's one of the main problems with many shows. They just aren't advertised properly. There have been several instances where I have just missed a local show that I didn't even know about until after the fact. The promoters aren't doing enough promoting!
<< <i>Todd,
Maybe dinner one night ?? >>
Hmm, Larry, So you only do dinner with boring silver guys? What about us fun and "colorful" copper girls?
Btw, Great report, Larry, thanks for posting it - see you in Long Beach, even if I'm not invited to dinner!
