What would I expect if I disperse this original box, 100 rolls of 1958-D wheats, or wouldn't you? Pi

Had this box sitting in my safe forever, I am affraid the gun solvent will affect these if kept there. It is an original box of BU 1958-D shotgun rolled wheat cents from a bank in Kansas City. As the story goes, my grandfather order this when he found the weat ear lincoln was the last year. In the box is 100 rolls od 1958-D shotgun rolled wheaties. It was actually sealed and opened it a few years ago to see what was inside.

Many coins are cherry red from the day they were minted, but some have developed and awesome light green, blue, lavender toning. These rolls are tight as tight packed and it had never been opend until I opened it.

So, my questions

If/when I decide to sell what is the best avenue to sell in?

Grey sheet has BU rolls, but I assume they would bring more, yes/no?

What would you expect something like this to sell for?

Should I sell roll by roll of as a box or original coins?

Should I keep it and move it to a closet or get rid of it? Don't really collect lincolns, just the rare die varities, also is there anything important that would encourage me to open the rolls??

I am not a game player, so I have no interest looking for a MS-67 or MS-68 (who knows) so what are the advantages/dis-advantages of the above.

I am just seeking advice so I hope no one considers this spam, I am just asking fellow collectors what they would do?

Thanks,

Jeff

Are the rolls marked with a bank name? Are they "spiral" wrapped or "v-notch" (Batdorf) wrapped? Generic rolls (Brandt, Johnson, etc) are probably worth $8 per roll on eBay. Spiral wrapped with a common bank name, $10-$12. If an uncommon bank name, or Batdorf wrapped, they could go for $15-$20 each.

    I'll give you $4 a roll. image

    Hoard the keys.
  • They are from the Bank of Kansas City- Denver to a bank in Albuquerque National Bank, Albuquerque, NM- so grandpa got them from his bank

Hopefully the pictures will help answer your questions on the way they were rolled.

Believe it or not, that's an uncommon bank to find rolls from, so you have a winner there. These look like spiral rolls but I can't tell from just the picture of the end, need a picture of the side of the roll. If they are spirals, I'd expect you could get $12-$15 each if you sell them slowly, 2-4 max at a time. I personally would love to have 10 of them. Let me know if you decide to sell them. I don't have any 58D rolls from this bank.

  • I'm afraid I'd have a ball and open every darn one of them to see what's inside. One special coin could make you very happy, two special coins could make you ex-tactic. image

I'd sell them in lots of say 10 rolls.

Thats enough to make it worth while for both parties.

You'd have less hassle, they'd get a volume discount.

Stuff it all in a $4.95 flat rate Priority mailer and off they go...................

If you are really afraid of missing something search 5-10 rolls which would give you a good statistical sample of what the rest of rolls would contain.

Well I am a Lincoln collector so I'd kept them if it was mine; you asked rightimage. But should you decide to sell I'd use the BST here first, I'm sure you'll get some interest and it'll save you alot of ebay/pp fees.

Hoard them, unless you feel it is time to unload them.

If you feel it is time to unload them, I'd be half way towards roll searching them myself for the 66RDs and maybe a faint, hopeful shot at a 67RD.

If you don't want to spend the time searching... BST... I know I'd be interested. (PM me if and when you list them)

Sell them to the guy checking 1958-D cents for the same die markers as the die seen on the "1959-D wheat cent."

true true, but if this was originally a single (previously) unopened box, I'd also look for diverse set of D boxes from across the country.

Agreed, you will probably not get more than four reverse dies in the box, but you have to start somewhere.
