95 Down--1969 Topps Football Completed in PSA 8 or Better

Sets are getting hard to complete. Its difficult to find that last card or two or three in many sets I collect. So what to do to keep collecting? Generally I am not the kind to upgrade 8s to 9s or 9s to 10s in large sets although I have done a fair amount of that. Also prewar baseball sets and 1935 National Chicle FB are very difficult to complete in PSA 8 or better so what seemed to make the most sense was to push forward a year or two. So I have pushed into 1969 and even the early 1970s in my Topps baseball, football and basketball sets. Since I have raw sets in all of these what seemed to make sense was to submit most of the raw set that I thought would "8" and fill in the remainder. I tried this with 1969 but found that nice set I assembled in nrmt-mt 15-20 years ago had about 30% of the cards off center...and PSA did not think all the cards I thought were 8s were really 8s. Thus I have to card by card buy 300 cards in psa 8 to finish the set. While that may be okay with 1 set it is too much to do with multiple sets.
So when the top card dealer in the universe in my opinion--Steve Novella--came to me with a 1969 Topps set that was 60 PSA 9s and 203 PSA 8s I took it in a heartbeat. What a beautiful set this is. The vibrant colors are beautiful, it has Brian Piccolo's RC and features cards of Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Joe Namath, Larry Csonka, Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr. It has no super difficult cards in 8 or better with trhe Donny anderson pop 28 being the lowest pop.
At an estmated 8.20 set rating the set ranks 9th behind football card collecting legend FabFrank and mega-fb dealer Mint State. The top set is 9.11. I will let the set rest at this level.
This set represents my 95th set completed in PSA 8 or better and my 25th football set. The goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in PSA 8 or better. I appreciate the help of all collectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goals.

This is A SET. Wow is all that comes to mind.
I hope you have something nice saved up for the finish line. It really doesn't matter as the 100 sets is the real FEAT.
As has been said many times , WAY TO GO JIM----- Sonny
5 to go!!!!!!
Good Luck.
Edited to add: I am putting together a raw set. I need the following cards:
51 - Sayers
120 - Csonka
132b - Checklist with NO border
139 - Butkus
163 - Otto
Please PM me if you have them and include your price. Thank you.
Doug
Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Thank you--it is a beautiful set....but I have nothing saved up currently --I will report them as I complete them.
Doug,
Thanks--I don't have extras though as I am selling my partially graded and raw set as a set.

I have a complete set. I had sent in the top 12 cards to be graded and nhave 9 psa 8s and 3 psa 7s. The rest are raw and I imagine would come back about the same.
I would sell that set as it is.
Jim
200 is out of the question. I doubt that I will set any numerical goals.
I don't think I will focus too much on upgrading 8s to 9s or 9s to 10s unless its a smaller set and I could perhaps make it a 9 or better set or an all 10 set.
What I intend to do is keep doing what I have been doing. I probably have over 100 sets in progress and I am working on most at any given point in time so Ideally I would like to finish many of these. I would also selectively buy complete sets although not too many exist that I have not at least already started.
For those of you who don't know Steve--he is a great ebay dealer. I would recomment him wholeheartedly.
Jim
I may have a graded set you may be interested in , drop me an PM or send me an email at Nuyauwka@aol.com, we have done business quite a few times in the past.
