The use of PVC flips may result in more than damage to your valuable coins...

Read this article on CNN's web site regarding PVC and the link to dioxins, deadly chemicals which have been known to cause cancer. Its an interesting tangent to the PVC problem we have in coin collecting.
It spurs the question that if we all know how coin flips containing PVC can damage coins (any who knows maybe damage to ourselves) why are they still manufactured and why would anyone buy them or use them for coin storage. I have heard people say they are used for "short term" storage or shipment and that they are used because they are a cheaper alternative to safer methods. It makes no sense to me that anyone would risk ruining a coin to save some coin (no pun intended). Yet every coin shop you go into coin flips, folders, and holders containging PVC can be found. I still also get a lot of coins purchased on ebay that are shipped to me in a PVC flip. I use only Saflips or cardboard flips with mylar film for raw coin storage. Sure the mylar flips cost a bit more, but if thats all it costs so that my coins wont be damged the small extra cost is piad without question. Sorry for the rant I just cant figure this one out.

I have seen so many coins ruined by them.
It was an interesting discussion. One of the top supply dealers said their is "vibrant demand" for them, but he warns them of potential damage to coins. Kind of like selling cigarettes, I guess.
<< <i>PVC flips should be outlawed.

The only way that will happen is if the health issue is brought to the fore front. And in order to outlaw them all PVC products have to be outlawed.
Can that be done?
I doubt you will eat too many pvc flips , althought the way some dealers wolf down hot dogs, who knows what else they intake
<< <i>Lotta PVC pipes out there. We all know it is an unstable chemical yet run drinking water in it.

Not entirely true with PVC pipes for drinking water. If PVC is being used it is against Plumbing code and the pipes need to be replaced. If you are referring to CPVC, it is okay for drinking water.

Yup. PVC pipes are used only for drain pipes.

break in half , and dealers have to re-holder to another flip .
Also I have received coins from auction houses in soft flips with a note that states-
Coins should be transfered to a safer holder .See link in Connecticoin post . "PVC Flip Thread"
