I finally made a POP 1 MS coin!

raycycaraycyca Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭
It's a 1976-P MS 67+ clad Kennedy. I bought the coin a few years ago for $3 at a shop. Submitted it to PCGS and came back as a 66. With the steel blue toning and absence of marks, I resubmitted it for Presidential review. Still a 66. Resubmitted again, and 66. NOW, as a freebie, I tried their plus grading and it comes back as a 67, and as a PLUS too!! Go figure. Rayimage

PS: Sorry guys, no photo yet. It was shipped back todady. I'll try and get a photo and post it here soon. But, I must warn you, I really suck at coin photos, but, I'll give it my best.

    It's very strange that:

    it receives a 66
    it receives another 66
    and then receives a 67+

    any pics?

Considering how many people are groaning about tight PCGS grading these days I'd say that coin must be something special. I hope you post photos when you can.

Way to go and one of the hardest dates clads in the series to get.

Not enough luster? Not enough color? What was missed the first two times around. Do graders make and record notes corresponding to the cert number/grade per coin for reference?

Congradulations!!!! Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. A 1 ½ point upgrade is outstanding.

I imagine it is going to look great in your set! Any pictures?

While reading this I could hear McCartney singing "The Long and Winding Road" in the background.

I would assume it has now found it's final resting place?

    And congrats.

If you wanted to send it to me for an early Xmass present, I would take a picture for you and give it a good home!

Just kidding, I know it will look good in your own set and with the history of how you finially made it is just that much more sweeter.

    Happy collecting image

First, congrats on your submission result. Secondly, though, this doesn't sit well with me. The fact that this coin stayed at 66 during past submissions and then gets a 1.5+ point upgrade is puzzling and also worrisome. This just feeds into my thought that the TPG grading is no more reliable than most reputable collectors' grading, yet they are considered the be-all/end-all. Keep in mind that this is just my opinion, not a bashing of the TPGs.

    Congratulations.

The '76-P half comes extremely nice and often PL but the things always
seem to have at least one long deep and nasty scratch on the reverse.
You can find them fairly clean about .5% of the time but these often have
    planchet marking or strike defects.

Steel blue toning isn't uncommon on this date.

The '75 mint set is slightly better than the '76 for cherry picking these.
Average quality is better on the '76 but the choicest tend to be in the '75.

Congrats! Were each of these submissions in the 66 holder or was it cracked out?

    +1

Happy for the Op but it doesn't speak well to consistency to see a 1.5 point bump after 3 times coming back a 66 image

From what I can see in the photos, it's a
    nice looking half.

  • Did you crack it out when you sent it in this time for the secure grading or was it in the 66 holder for a regrade?

And when one of those times was for Presidential Review !

Stories like this make me care less and less about grades as assigned by any grading company, regardless of tier. I find myself way more interested in problem free raw coins that display nicely in Danscos. I turn to PCGS and NGC only when it comes to key dates and even then I'm more worried about the coin being authentic than the grade assigned. Hell, even a "Genuine" can be resubmitted and come back with an actual grade. It's a shame.

A more accurate grade of this coin would be MS 67+*

Every time it was resubmitted in the original 66 slab. Always said it was a 67 in a 66 holder. I don't know what they think they saw, but, it wasn't there.
