Dealers-your advice on BST protocol?

coindeucecoindeuce Posts: 13,490 ✭✭✭✭✭
When you post a buy offer on the B/S/T, and a potential seller responds with the requested information, do you answer regardless of your decision to buy or not buy from that respondent, particularly if the respondent is a dealer and you know that to be the case?

Edited to add: the question stemmed from a BST offer I responded to. The dealer insisted on "First crack" at the item and requested images. I noted numerous log-ins of the dealer after I provided the images, but no response. Not even after I posed the question: Is it a Yes, or a No?

Edited for further insight: Given the history that this dealer has, I expect that he may be trying to use my images to resell it without making a commitment to me first. Since his initial response to was to offer a quick answer after viewing my images, and that apparently was not a credible response, should I just bag him and move on?

I answer regardless whether it be declining, accepting or countering. If nothing else I thank them for taking the time to reply.

ETA- but I'm not a dealer.

Based on my limited experience as a seller on the BST, it seems that most people do NOT respond. Personally I don't understand that. As a buyer, I would always at least send an "OK, thanks. I guess I'd pass".

I always respond and others should respond back to the seller too. You need to "close the loop." It is common courtesy and helps out the seller if they have other people inquiring about an item.

Edited: oh wait, I am not a dealer. But closing the loop on communication should be a good motto for all.

I cant stand that especially when you have others interested and it holds up you selling.

As a matter of common courtesy, I always try to reply promptly, whether it's a yes or a no.

I have had many a negotiator get the coins bought out from under them while we were still talking. 1st fair solid cash offer gets the coin/coins.........

  • I always respond... whether the answer is yes or no... and thank the person for their time, if my answer is no... I also wish them well... just old school common courtesy image

If I make an offer or request more info/pics... AND I know I will be offline for a bit... I include that info in my communication...

If I contact someone on the BST thru PM... and they choose to not respond... I chalk it up to "they are not that interested in doing business with me"... or perhaps they are not anxious to do any business... I shrug... make a mental note of their handle for future "probably might as well not waste my time"... and move on...

There are FAR too many coins in this world for me to get hung up on any one coin... I can not possibly buy them all... or sell them all... and to my experience... there are always other coins available down the road... and other collectors/dealers looking for coins... even when it comes to special "dates"... I am just not a "GOTTA fill that hole" kind of collector or dealer... if I can, fine... if not...that's fine too...

While I totally enjoy this hobby... and most of the business ( not all image ) that is attached to it... at the end of the day... there is much more to life than coins and I hope to never lose any sleep over them... or any one (potential) transaction...

The possible buyer should always respond if anything just to be polite especially in a place like this where friendships are made.

You were always a great BST guy. I think I actually boned you once on a Morgan deal but that was when my wife booted me and I lost access to puter for a few weeks.....

Yes folks, successful BST's happen when you communicate !!!

I've responded to about a half dozen WTB ads over the last couple of years....I'm 100% on not even getting a response from these people. Even a quick, "no interest at all" response would be appreciated.

Follow up to my above post, it's people who post like...I have $73.09 in my PayPal account, what do you want to sell me.

    I completely ignore those threads...

As for WTB threads with specific wants... if I have what they are looking for I will PM them... some have worked out quite well... others... not so well... sort of like the coin business in general... image

No, no response change at all. We were working a deal and I did not get back to him. I have apologised and thats it, no money changed hands. LArry knows where I am coming from and is ok with it, I am sure.

That was the funniest thing I read tonight. I'm sure the writer didn't mean to write the way it was interpreted. Or maybe I have a dirty mind. Anyway, to answer the question I always will respond within 5 days.

Hmmm, dealers being rude, collectors being rude. And here I thought any members here are all above board, and act like it when dealing on the bst.image

Always respond. Yes or no. I attempt to do this asap, but in any event within 24 hours, which even that seems too long. If anything goes wrong with my promised action in a deal, I let the other party know...It all boils down to the golden rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

myself I have sold a little on the BST. I respond to the first person who says they want an item. In the cases were they want to think about its no, whoever pays for the item first gets the item period. I have not had any issues though the flakes are not a factor with the logic that the person who responds and pays first gets the item. who cares if they happen to be a dealer. Start off though with a decent image and very accurate description.
