There is much to learn from advanced/experienced collectors

I know this will be a worthless without pics and names thread but oh well.....

I want this thread to be about the ability to learn from others regardless of the series you collect and the series they collect. Whenever you have a chance to hang out or chat with a very high collector find a way to do it. You can learn a vast amount of knowledge from them. If you know someone who has some great collections may be at a show you are at find a way to introduce yourself.

I say this because over the past couple years I have met some real great collectors. One of the first high end collectors I met was buying a widget from me because he loves the series so much he just buys coins. talking to him for just a little while changed how I bought in seconds. I showed him a few coins and the response was "Why did you buy that" and then he explained what mark or distraction led to the comment. This collector is now ill, when you realize the knowledge bases that will be lost over the coming years in reinforces the fact we all need to grab what we can.

More recently I have seen a few seven figure collections being sold. The other day when this was happening the buyer had his set with him and was comparing coins. On a couple occasions I was handed 2 coins and asked which one he should either keep or buy. This was not my series and in one situation a 66 example was far superior to a 67 example. The "downgrade" was going to cost 5 figures but the coin was superior and what mattered was opinions. I knew which I liked better quickly because I saw something different in the strike, while the collector had seen so many coins it was about to for his eyes to take a breather. Watching collectors like this is a great way to re-learn that quality is worth more than registry points. Sometimes we see so many coins our eyes get numb and an non collector can point out flaws or aspects of a coin we have over looked. What is amazing is that the dollars almost become secondary. Superior coins will be purchased, higher graded coins that are inferior are cast aside.

I know I am fortunate that I have been in a many great situations to learn. I just hope others find a way to learn from others both on this board and in the coin community. Just say hi to someone new. Then start picking their brain. Show them a coin and ask for an opinion. Ask to see one of their coin's and why they purchased it. Just learn. Learning from people is a whole different animal so take advantage, it is never to late to start.

Bl62vett, well said indeed. We are all indebted to those experienced collectors,

who have taken the time and effort to educate less experienced collectors.

Many right on points "blu62vette"... I definitely agree with trying to seize the moment so to speak while it`s right there in front of you...Never know when or if you`ll get another chance to learn from the best...

I have always been a firm believer of eye appeal and whats in the holder verses whats on the holder...But with that said it is a very cool thing when you do get the best of both worlds and own a coin that has both eye appeal and the correct grade and all the bells and whistles on the holder as well...

On a personal note being new to this forum (since last Dec.) it has been one of the best things i have done was join this forum...I have learned lots so far and have made many new interesting friends and acquaintances from all walks of life that have the same interests as myself... image

    Thanks for the post...

Over time your collection, Todd, will be one of the best. With the keen eye and time
on your side to collect you can do it. For sure.

I've only had a few times to sit and go over CBHs with members of the Bust Half Nut Club. Each time was invaluable for many reasons. And each was all about quality, without $$ mentioned. Thanks for reminding me...

sometimes the relationships we build with other collectors is more rewarding then the coins themselves ......
