1984 Star John Stockton

I just picked up a GAI 8 utah Jazz bag on ebay for 74 bucks.. i don't know if this was really a good deal or not.. but i haven't seen many stockton rookies on eaby so figured i would take a shot. i was hoping that the title was misleading and many potential bidders thought that it was a utah jazz set with out stockton.. My question is.. how good is Gai at eliminating fakes? For any star experts out there.. were the reprints just for the key cards.. or were entire team sets reprinted. hopefully the stockton card is in good shape and BGS will grade it. any idea what card books for in a bgs 8 or 9?

As a dealer, I specialized in Star Company basketball before the brand crashed in the mid-90s due to counterfeiting, or rather, the release of second prints using original plates by the owner of Star. The Stockton rookie was not one of these that was reprinted, and to the best of my knowledge, I don't ever recall seeing a fake Stockton either (Jordan, Barkley, Best of the New, etc. were better marks.)

I think the only thing you really need to worry about is whether or not the bag itself is original. Because so few dealers/collectors have handled a decent amount of legitimate bagged Star Company merchandise, it is quite difficult for a novice to pick out a real bag when they don't even know what to look for.

  • Post some pics of the card when you get it in! Last March 2009 I sent several star basketball cards into Bgs they were clean and sharp but plagued by the centering problems. The wilkins got a 8.5 by Bgs at one time it had a 6 pop but as of now it has got a quite a few of 8.5's. During the time it had no cards graded higher than a 8.5

  • The Stockton that year is notorious for being off centered left to right. Still knowing that, I would give it a shot. I lost out on a BGS 7.5 that went for about 75 a few weeks ago.

I loved star basketball in the early 90's before they crashed. I never had the Stockton. I paid $450 for an Olajuwon rc bag, $500 for Ewing 86 knicks bag, lol.

Fun before they crashed. It's a shame, because a lot of the key cards were never counterfeited, yet the whole series got tainted because of it. Most of the key 85 star cards are off center...jordan, stockton, definitely olajuwon, the barkley is probably better than most, but still rare to find any star card exactly 50-50 side side.
