Goloid/Metric pattern set sold for only $6.10 !

July 6, 1880
From: Preston, Acting
To: Henry Phillips, Jr., 209 S. 5th Street, Philadelphia
I have received you letter undated, requesting to be furnished with Mint Records for 1856, 1861, 1862, 1871 and 1874, and also with a specimen of the metric dollar.
The mint reports prior to 1873 were made by the Mint at Philadelphia and none are in possession of this office. Our supply for 1874 has long been exhausted.
The silver metric dollar to which you refer for a part of a set of three pieces, the Stella or $4.00 gold piece, the Goloid and the metric dollars, which were struck by a Resolution of Congress, and for its use. I would not like to break up a set and as some few have not been called for by Members of Congress, who are entitled to them, I shall take pleasure in transmitting a set to your address, if you desire it, upon payment of the value of the metal contained, viz: $6.10.

An interesting discovery. When Philadelphia Mint Superintendent A. Loudon Snowden asked for permission
in 1880 to sell sets to collectors at $15 each he was turned down by the Mint Bureau yet Henry Phillips was
allowed to purchase one at the official price.
