Chatanooga Coin busted by the US MINT

Front page of the electronic coin world with the paper issue due to hit the shelves in few days. Has anyone else read this yet? Apparently, the US Mint has issued a cease and desist order. It has to do with their coin world advertisements for the HOt Springs Quarter package they were offering. THey stamped hot springs quarter rolls as US Mint Ceremonial rolls. I always wondered hot they could really proven they were ceremonial rolls, the only ones that have any credibility as far as I'm concerned are the pictorial stamps from the US Post Office that are available at a post office close to the ceremonies. Possible criminal action, does anyone think criminal action is going to far?

Yes. That was a stupid overreaction by the Mint. A simple "Please do not do that any more" letter would have been plenty of reaction

Not too far in my opinion. It's deceptive and meant to deceive. Cease and desist is certainly proper.
Criminal? How long has this been going on, have they been warned before? More info for me to
    take a stance.

  • Personally, I do agree that this advertisement and past advertisements were very misleading. I could take a roll and stamp it US MINT Ceremonial roll, anyone could put a rubber stamp on a nfs string quarter roll and make it out to be a ceremonial roll. The ones that have the official united states post offfice cancellations on them are the true ceremonial rolls. Many people make hundreds or thousand mile trips to these ceremonies and then wait in line for hours at the local post office to have their ceremonial rolls stamped and cancelled. In my opinion, these rolls chatanooga was selling takes away from the true usps stamped ceremonial rolls.

Agree these kinds of hucksters should be slammed. I still remember ordering a 1970 Mint set from a TV Guide ad when I was a kid, thinking it was an official set. It came, but do you think I ever got my Kennedy? I'm still pissed about it... Good to keep other unsuspecting numismatists from suffering similar let downs.

In this case, it was a roll that was actually sold at a U.S. Mint ceremony. There was nothing fraudulent about it.

    The Mint over-reacted.

That would make you or the hypothetical anyone liars, but that is not what they did. They were actually at the ceremony.

How do you feel about taking boxes of silver eagles from a warehouse floor at random and calling them "First Strikes?"

    Yes I read about it.

I too think the US Mint over-reacted.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I missed the article, but I do not recommend this company at all. The bait and switch, offer deals on graded coins, then send a lower grade.

Can one be sure that the ceremonial rolls are legit?

Most of the time boxes are available on ebay before ceremony date.
What would stop someone from buying a box and having them stamped at the postoffice?

Well, since the Ceremonial Rolls were part of the package which included the US Mints program and some other stuff, I don;t see why I would question it.
They could also be available individually which could be questionable but in reality, what real value does ANY of have? The "I was there" value certainly doesn't count if you buy them on the aftermarket.

I wonder if they got a Cease and Desist ATS?

Absolutely no sympathy for any company that tinkers with misleading the public about coins. The hobby has lost thousands of potential enthusiasts due to misleading advertising.

Good for the Treasury in taking aggressive action!

Why do people even pay a premium for this crap? Seems so unexciting.
