Ebay/paypal 675.00 chargeback, buyer failed, then ebay paid it??

I have been wrangling with a buyer over a item i sold on ebay in march for 675 dollars. A few weeks after he recieved the item he decided he overpaid and wanted me to refund 200 dollars. I politely refused. A few days after that he sends me a message saying the item was broken and it was going to cost 250 to fix. I pretty much ignored that one and called paypal. He said in his email he took the item to a shop and they said it had some capacitors out and it would cost 250 to fix. ( I really did not believe it) I asked paypal about the fact the guy says he took the amp apart without my permission. The paypal rep said that if he filed a claim they would not find in his favor since he took it apart. On one hand i did not want the item back, but did not really believe paypal so i called them again to verify. They claimed i would win if he filed a claim. ( at this point no claim had been made)

I sent the guy an email stating the unit was in perfect working order when i sold it and i had no idea what he may have done to it for the month he used it and the return period was passed. ( I knew i should have caved in and sent him 200 dollars)

Sure enough a few days later he files a claim. We did the banter back and forth and he said he took it apart. I esculated it to a claim. A few days later i see my paypal account is NEGATIVE 675.00 and they want me to make a deposit. I call paypal and got nowhere but mad.

I get the ebay email saying they are refunding the guy his money and he is going to return the item. 10 days or how every many days ebay gives the buyer to return the item goes by without a word from the buyer.

I get a email from ebay saying the case is closed and the money has been returned to my paypal account since the buyer did not return the item or provide the tracking info. So i got my money back and i was HAPPY!!! CASE CLOSED!!! said the ebay email.

A few days later the UPS lady shows up with a package. I could tell it was the item i had sold. Since ebay had given me my money back i refused the package and ups would be sending it back to the buyer.

I got a bad feeling...

2 days later i get another ebay email with the same case number and it says CASE CLOSED but upon reading it it says they have decided to refund the guy his money (675.00) and i would be recieveing the item back. I logged into my paypal account and i did not have a 675 dollar chargeback, I was livid and called ebay ,I called them 3 times and got a different answer each time. Although i got differnt answers each time i was ASSURED THAT I WAS NOT GOING TO BE RECIEVING A 675 dollar chargeback, that ebay was going to foot the bill. I explained that i refused the ups shipment since ebay/paypal had returned the money to my account. A 3 reps basicly said the guy was getting his money back from ebay and he would be able to keep the 675 dollar item.

3 days have now passed and i still expect a chargeback. Has this ever happened to you?

When the buyer first contacted me a month after the sale and wanted 200 dollars back , i did offer to let him return the item for a full refund minus his return shipping but he wanted 200 dollars back and keep it.

Typical e-bay transaction gone bad. Normally the buyer wins, because e-bay has slanted their website to buyers.

It's the new eBay buyer protection plan. Dozens of stories of eBay footing the bill instead of tagging the seller. Why do you think they jacked fees up so high on this last increase? It's so they could afford to cover the scamming buyers in cases where they determine it isn't the seller's fault.

I had a nearly identical issue happen with a PDA I sold to someone in India, who accused me of sending DVD's in it's place. He escalated the issue to a claim, but didn't provide tracking in the alotted time, and his claim was denied. He sent me an email saying he was sending me the DVD's anyway, and expected a refund despite the fact that PayPal refused his claim. The DVD's showed up a week later, shipped from a US address, and I promptly refused them (although I was dying to see what they were!). A week later, I get an email from PayPal saying they reversed their decision because he appealed and said I refused the return. It took an hour on the phone with PayPal to get everything straightened out, and the decision was reversed again in my favor.

Not as bad as your story, but I had a similar incident with a buyer. However, I was new to ebay and didn't know I only had 10 days to respond. Because I didn't respond in time I screwed myself out of $800. The buyer kept the item, and I got a chargeback. I was out the money and the item. I contacted the buyer and tried my best to politely ask them to send the item back, they refused. Luckly I didn't have any money in my PP account so ebay couldn't steal it from me. They called me twice a day for about 6 months, I refused to pay them. They cancled my account, and a year later I opened another one.
