What about the bands on this new Mercury dime pickup?

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,237 ✭✭✭✭✭
Bought this coin up recently and the photos of the reverse were decent enough for me to roll the dice. Got it in hand today and it is really close to FB, although not listed on the holder(old NGC). What do you think? It has a mark that goes across the right side but doesnt appear to interrupt the band line. Should I send it back or send it in for review?

  • I'd lean heavily toward no unless the price will increase exponentially by getting it into a FSB holder.

From what I see in your picture it appears to be a date before 1926. I guess if it was a 25P or 18P I would send it in for a try. Outside of that I would not waste the money if it was not in a 66 holder.

EDIT: Geez its great to have old eyes that see things that are not there......image

Look like it may have a shot, but there is a weakness at about 20% of the way in from the left.

The coin is a 42P and is currently in a MS67 holder. The price of a MS67FB would make it worth it, but only if it gets the upgrade, otherwise I would have an expensive 42P. Other opinions?

I am sure I am least qualified of all responders here, yet the band lines appear complete to me. I hope you will let us know your decision and/or result.

I'll go with the no crowd. Looks to touch on left side.

There might have been a time when that made a FSB slab, but I don't think it would today. The weakness
seen on the left will not pass muster IMO. The TPG's (and myself) like to see nice rounded bands.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
