At what point will some of the Popular Registries begin to creep to a crawl?

I see it happening in a year or so. The Ike Registries. The Type Registries (especially the Moderns) will begin to lock in and unless a Registry is sold, progress will creep to a crawl. There may be many weeks (in the future) where NO 'red' is showing. It's not due to a lack of motivation- simply a diminished supply of coins.
Do you see that happening to your Registry?

One correction: When I state, 'diminished supply of coins', what I'm referrring to is a lack of the top grades that will then be needed to compete being "on the market".

Most of the people that have MS70 or PR70DC coins will continue to upgrade until all of those are gone. Some of these coins just don't warrent the price for me. That 1979 TYII PR70DC SBA for over $1700 will keep me from buying them. So for me it will be mainly PR69DC or the best I can afford. So I see some slowing by next year also.

I agree.. there will be a time when the top sets have a "lock' on the top 5. I wonder if you have a 100% complete set in the top 5 if their should be a time limit. (Say 3 years) Then you get bumped to the All time finest list only. It would keep the Registry fresh and moving.

it's already difficult to find some of the higher graded coins, and the irony being that we'll be the ones to drive the rise in price. i stepped into the registry with a modest plunge in jefferson's. some of the 69dc's just can't be found, the sms dc's and 70's are just to overpriced. i've settled on working with one dealer and my own two feet to find the best i can. gonna submit for grading and hope for the best. we need more shows in the cleveland area.

Spooly, I have to TOTALLY disagree with that idea !!! Should Louis Eliasberg Sr.'s set of U.S. coins be disqualified from showing up on a list of the all-time greatest U.S. coin collections just because he owned it for more than three years? Some great sets take YEARS to put together, and upgrading can go on for many more years. You shouldn't bump sets from the "Current" list until the owner sells them off or breaks them up.

Should Michael Jordan have been barred from getting a league MVP after 3 years of play? Should Michelle Kwan have been barred from winning her fourth World championship in ice skating? Should Tiger Woods be barred from the PGA tour? Should concert pianist Vladimir Horowitz have been barred from performing in Carnegie Hall after his third sold-out recital ? Should Claude Monet be limited to three paintings in any one museum? You get my point ... #1 is #1 regardless.

  • I am sure eventually things will start to crawl ... however, doing the math (and rounding to make it close enough for the government) ... given 2200 registry sets and 100 coins per set, you come up with 220,000 ... still a way to go given the number of coins graded thus far and the number still to be graded ...

I think it is all a question of interest. As long as those who start sets remain interested, the Registry sets will do well. For example, in the Mercury series there are only 3 completed sets. I am certain there are many other completed sets that are not registered (duh!), but will the folks who are in my situation of 44% complete still keep adding? That is the question. For what it is worth, I think the Regsitry Sets will have legs and be here for a while.

  • Well to keep my thoughts in line I dont see that happening, things may slow but there will always be new blood in some form or another to keep all sets alive, maybe not strong but alive....and thats the mainstream of this hobby.......

One of the problems that may surface for the Modern sets is that you will have a number of completed sets all needing one of the top pops, but all of the sets will be complete. In the "classic" series, i.e. Walkers, Mercs, SLQ, Morgans, early Lincolns..etc. you get into serious money that is beyond the ability of many collectors for the keys in high grades. This will keep them from hitting the same ceiling.

More simply put, one set of Registrys will be more driven by dollars and the other by high grade availability (Ikes, Kennedys...etc.). I still think there will be significant interest in both types. Time will tell.

the "serious money issue" happens in the moderns too. anyone can complete a set if they just want to be registered and 100%, but i don't see much of a point in that. the better grades needed to move up
are tough to locate and can be too expensive on a modest payroll. even the top dogs keep upgrading,
though, which i think is good. registry set awareness should bring more coins into certification which is
good for everyone. and even if a set were to be placed on the all-time-list, seems to me an upgrade would put it current, so what's the use of moving it in the first place? i figure there will be more movement
of coins among registry sets as they get upgraded.
