Ebay seller wants escrow.com - scam???

drfishdrfish Posts: 947 ✭✭✭✭
I "won" a gold coin (photos lifted from us mint)from a new seller with only 2 sales (years ago!) and now the guy sends this email " This is my first transaction with so much money. I'v signed up with escrow.com, but don't know how it works. But I won't be able to call them until this afternoon. I plan to ship it in a bubble pack by UPS. Feel free to give me a call " I replied I would pay with paypal as stated in the terms of the auction.Scam or innocent new seller?

If the seller wants to pay the escrow.com fees, I see no concern at all. The seller does not receive his money from escrow.com unless you keep the coin beyond the review period afforded you by escrow.com from the date of your receipt of the coin, which the seller has to ship by a trackable method via USPS. Both you and the seller would have to register with escrow.com for the transaction to take place using their service.

Could be either but a quick way to check is to suggest you set up the escrow. If he balks, then he is planning to send you a link to a fake escrow that is really an offshore scam. But just sticking with paypal is probably easier. However, he may have hears that paypal screws buyers sometimes...--Jerry

Regardless of whatever method the seller and buyer agree upon to effect this transaction, if I were the buyer, I would make certain to have the item shipped to a P.O. Box address so that the item could be opened in the presence of a U.S.P.S. clerk or Postmaster. We all know about the scammer ploy to send a package weighted with anything but the item purchased. AFAIAC, this would be a scammer's only loop hole on a PP or escrow.com transaction.
