How many major varieties of the 1869 Indian Cent exist?

1869/9
1869/69
1869/8
Others?

What are their approximate populations?

    << <i>1869/8 >>

The 1869/8 has been delisted and discredited for quite some time, as it turns out that the "overdate" was just the 1869/9 RPD.

One of the goofs I made in my collecting life was this coin. At the time (maybe 30 years ago?), I knew it as the 1869/8. I bought one from a dealer and sent it to ANACS for authentication and they sent it back as an 1869/9 . So, thinkking it was a minor variety, I took it back to the dealer and got my money back. Fool that I was!

The 69/9 is a tough coin to locate in problem free condition VG and higher.
After helping a few different folks build IHC collections, I felt the underrated dates in VF and up were the 69/9, the 1870, and the 1878. After a few years of searching, I've squirreled away a number of the 1870 and '78 coins, but only one 69/9, a lowly VG. Greysheet prices have doubled on this over the past few years, so it would have been a great date to put away, but I just couldn't find any!

Great Charmy - rub it in and make them look easy to find image
I recall issuing you a 'you suck' for cherry picking one of these that was in a 65 slab, undesignated!

Ha! I just thought this thread was a good excuse to show them off! imageimage And they are in deed hard to find in high grade, but I have come across these few because I specifically hunt high and low for them - and pay strong for them. And what a good memory you have Walker! I think the "you suck" 1869/69 is the second one in these photos. (I wasn't sure if your "you suck" award was "official" - so can I put that in my sig line now?image)

I thought you were talking about the 69/9 varieties, not the 69/69 varieties. Did you mean to say all of these varieties are tough problem-free finds better than VG, or just the 69/9 varieties?

Gee, now you make me feel guilty for convincing Ken Bressett around that time to correct the listing in the Redbook from 1869/8 to 1869/9.....
