Do you seek the wisdom of a child when making important coin decisions?

renomedphysrenomedphys Posts: 3,748 ✭✭✭✭✭
I cannot tell you how many times I've been rescued from an irrational decision by my 8 year old boy. He likes to look at my coins, and often we discuss the merits of buying and selling certain pieces. He has the good fortune of not caring a wit about big sums of money, so for him, it all boils down to the coin, and how it looks. If you have any similar accounts, share them here.

The finance department here would probably say that I display the wisdom of an eight year old when buying....anything!image

On Every single coin that I show my daughter and ask her if I sure buy, she always says yes to buy the coin.

  • Kids are awesome. They want to make sure that I get the best bang for my buck depending on what type of coin to buy, they say buy, only if I treat them out in the end. image

It's my "child-like faith" in the US Mint that gets me into trouble...image

Absolutely! My son definitely holds sway over many of my buying and collecting decisions. Wouldn't be much fun if he didn't!

When a child says she is looking for a "Dora the Explorer" coin... I thought of D. Carr's wisdom.

Quote from my 8 year old son the other night.

Dad, only and idiot would trade $100 for .25 cents.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

    Always!!!

My kids like shiny Kennedy halves, proof mint coins and other shiny, flashy looking coins and think my crusty original mid-grade Barbers are ugly. Now where would I be as a collector if I took their opinions seriously? image

I often show my potential NEWPs to my mother. She has a very good eye for aesthetics, and like the OP's child, is not swayed by the details of rarity/price/etc.

Yes in a sense. I've got two small children, so I stopped buying coins, selling coins, looking at coins, and generally having any coins around.

Now I use that time to play with the kids instead, and "do coins" vicariously through you all on the CU forums after hours (and occasionally at work)

Not really my kids are in their mid twenties and just say "Dad do what you want."

My daughters, at least when I occasionally would press the for an opinion, would look at me incredulously and say, "you spent HOW MUCH for that little piece of shiny metal???"

Not any different, I suppose, than my wife...

TrainNut (12 year old) is my second set of eyes and frequently we disagree over the right "look" for coins to buy. He likes the really early US stuff with crust, like this one from his registry set:

I am going for a comparable look in the dirty gold, and he'll willingly look at those coins as long as they are pre-Civil War. For my classic commems, I can only get him to look at coins when he is "in the mood", and I have to promise him NOT to show him any Bridgeports (his candidate for the ugliest coin ever, up to and including SBA's).

We also played the "70" grade on moderns, and argued through many a submission to save his dad unnecessary grading fees.

I have asked my 11 year old son (and even my wife!) for advice, as recently as this week. Usually, they are a good barometer for "eye appeal". I no longer show better date coins to my son because he usually says that they look like all the rest.image

In part, I am doing this to casually engage him in my hobby interest.

My son tells me to 'STOP LOOKING AT COINS ALL THE TIME'. He's 11 and more interested in Nerf or Razor right now.

One of the local dealers here has a 9 year old son that has a good eye, and knows more about coins than most weekend show dealers. He is quite the wheeler-dealer and knows how to make a buck. It's fun to watch. I was at a show a couple months ago and it took him less than 30 seconds to get $20 from me. LOL

I generally run prospective purchases by my wife. She's very good with the notion of eye appeal.
