Ebay Question

zas107zas107 Posts: 831 ✭✭✭
I purchased a coin earlier this week on Ebay for just shy of 6k. I checked out via paypal, and no where in the listing was insurance mentioned, simply a shipping cost of 6.95. Today I got a message from the seller that said "
The coin is going to have to be mailed tomorrow. Just wondering why you didnt apply insurance to this coin"

If I read ebay's rules correctly, insurance cannot be charged separately, and it is the sellers responsibility to make sure the item arrives safely to the buyer. Am I right about this?

I went ahead and sent them 20 dollars for insurance, and a message to the effect of: insurance was not mentioned anywhere in the listing, and it is their responsibility to make sure the item arrives safely to me, and despite all of this I still sent them money for insurance.

Any other suggestions? It just seems like odd behavior from a seller for a coin that was purchased for 6k (seller has almost 1600 positive feedback, with 0 negatives). Are they simply fishing for more money? Am I in the wrong? Any thoughts are welcomed.

You should have saved your $20.00.
Responsibility is on the seller to arrange safe delivery.

On eBay, insurance is the responsibility of the seller.

Does it specifically state that anywhere on eBay?

Why would the seller rely on the buyer to pay for the insurance? That is stupid and bad business on the seller's part. If the buyer does not receive said coin who is going to pay? I never understand how petty some of these sellers are. When you sell a $6k coin there is going to be some fees. If you don't want to pay them then sell them at a coin show, or to a dealer or.........

Because insurance is a legitimate cost of doing business. So like most businesses, costs can be passed on to the customer or added to the price. It should be stated up front if insurance is included. IF the buyer refuses to pay then the prudent seller will pay it or absorb the loss if that should occur. Do you think the guy who picks up my garbage eats the cost of fuel when the price goes up or does he add a fuel surcharge to the bill?

This type of insurance extortion is why ebay made it against to rules for a seller to list insurance as optional. I list a $6000 coin with about $30 shipping to include the insurance. I probably lose a few bucks. But I don't think $30 shipping is much of a deterrence to serious buyers and I doubt it would have bothered you. But now you feel like you've been taken for $20. No big % on a $6k coin but why give the buyer a negative experience. He is just asking for bad feedback. --jerry

Insurance is the responsibility of the seller everywhere, not just eBay.

I would think it would depend on the specific terms of the contract/agreement. If eBay or PayPal has not already done so, it would be nice if someone would quote specific parts of the UCC delineating each party's legal obligations in such situations.

I wouldn't have paid for the insurance. And the seller would be a dope to ship it without. The risk is entirely his.

When you buy a a $6k coin through the mail there will be some shipping costs. If you don't want to pay them then buy at a coin show, or from a coin shop or........

That being said, sellers on eBay can include in the shipping fee the cost of insurance but are not allowed to charge a separate fee for insurance on top of the listed shipping fee.
