have you noticed recently that

There have been a plethora of PSA cards that have been graded PSA 8 that are in no way so when you consider the centering. It seems that recently, PSA has been much more leinent with the centering. Recently a 1973 psa 8 Carl Yaz, a 1965 Oliva, 65 Ed Mathews, (up for bid now) and a MANY others (some from the same seller, I might add) , are in no way a PSA 8.

Your thoughts.

I haven't seen those Baseball cards you mentioned, but I have noticed that too for some issues like
'61 Fleer Football cards. I've seen 75/25 top to bottom centering
getting straight 8's. I don't understand what the problem is with consistency in centering. It's the only
real grading factor that can be measured exactly. O/c cards should never end up in unqualified 8 or 9
holders but it does seem to happen on occasion.

I have no idea what goes on in the grading room, but maybe many cards are given the push for 'eye appeal'
that mitigates other weaknesses on a card. I really don't know the answer.

Personally, I'd like to see the centering guidelines tightened up a bit by all grading companies.

Did anyone see that '67 Topps Football Fred Arbansas PSA 10 on ebay last night? It was centered 65/35
or possibly worse. How that slipped through is beyond belief.

This isn't a bash on PSA either. Since I mostly collect PSA graded cards, I just notice these issues more
    with cards graded by them.

"PSA 8: Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse."

The Robinson card is a 8. Whoever grades that card knows that's a major card. These are the ones that make me wonder about the whole grading process.
  • Agreed, that B Robby is no ten it just seems that the standards have ben lax lately, perhaps the graders are on a "quota" or they have changed their quality control process.

I believe it may be a particu;lar grader or two, the "off center" PSA 8's are pretty much listed by the same sellers.

That's called a grading loophole. Any centering ranges listed gives the graders an out. Sometimes this is referred to as 'eye appeal'.
Trust me, use the 65/35 or better centering for an 8 on your raw cards subs and you'll save a lot of money and frustration with your results.

Even PSA 10 only requires the card to be 60/40 centered... that's what I would call that STUNNING Brooks Robinson.

Agreed, that Robinson is stunning. But I feel that any GEM MINT 10 should be 50/50 all the way around. I think that Robinson deserves a 9 holder though.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

  • right, a 10 should be reserved for a "10" just like in the movie.

Yes, the Robinson is a little like Megan Fox + 10 pounds. She's a 10 without the 10, but with the 10 she must be downgraded to a mere 9. You get what I'm sayin'?

Anyone who feels this way should look into using another grading company because this isn't PSA standard.

  • I dont think that anyone can deny that PSA standards have decreased particulary over the last 6-12 months.

Take a look on ebay and see all the "off centered " psa 8's out there.

I am not accusing anybody and I am just MAKING A JOKE , but we used to have a joke around NYC card shows saying that if you put $20 behind the card when submitted, you would get a better grade.

  • case in point (re. quality) , take a look at the thread in the other forum re the 1974 Ryan psa 9.
