lost out on this one, and just wondered thoughts from other error collectors? to me it seemed to be a nickel stuck on a penny planchet would have loved to see it in hand. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230472350245&ssPageName=ADME:BimageNA:US:1123

Yep, be glad you did not waste your money on that junk. Do yourself a favor with that $30 and buy the Error Coin Encyclopedia. There are plenty of auctions on eBay for nickels struck on cent planchets. Don't be fooled. Genuine error examples of those will sell for well above the $30 amount you saw in the auction you posted.

Again, do yourself the favor and buy said book.

Speaking of buying the error book. What ever happened to Lonesome John and all the stuff he wrote and did with errors "back in the day?"

John wrote about counterfeit coinage and Old West collectible glass bottles if memory serves me, nothing on error coins, even though he was "Da Man" at the time. Right around (early 70's) when a young whipper-snapper named Fred was making his first indelible mark in the hobby.

John Devine wrote two books on counterfiet coins,
    dealing mainly with gold coins.

I'm still in touch with him via email, and see him
every other year or so for lunch when his travels
    find him in LA.

He travels around the country (mostly the Western
US) in his motor him w/ his wife Peggy.
