Why coin dealers drink, Part CCCXC

Just had a fellow in with an average circulated Russian gold 5 Ruble of Czar Nicholas II.
.
I offer him $150 for it, just slightly under melt.
.
He asks "What's the newmistic value of it?"
.
I say we will sell it for about $20 more.
.
He asks "How much will it be worth if the head of the Russian Orthodox Church declares Putin to be the King of Russia?"
.
What else could I do? I pulled the lever on the trap door and dropped him into the alligator pit.

"I may be penniless, but the last czar of Russia was Nicholas."

    haha....

I had a fellow call me today and ask how much his mint sewn bag of dollars was worth. Excited about the prospects, but remaining calm and cool asked him if it was still sealed and he said "Just like the day it was issued from the mint". So now I'm perked up a little and ask him casually, "well what year might that be and is there a mint mark ? "

    He answered : " 1979 D Susan B Anthony"

Who installed your trap door ?

I get lots of emails and calls every day with
folks that think they have rare error coins.

When I say that their coin was 'run over by
a train', or 'hit with a hammer', or chemically
altered, or 'sandwiched between two pieces
of wood', etc. etc. ......you'd be surprised how
many of them then say to me:

"Why would the Mint do that?"

Maybe a stupid question but wouldn't a mint bag of SBA have a little extra value?

Only if you can find someone who wants it.

About 7 or 8 years ago I thought it would be fun to try to flip some coins on ebay. I bought a mint sealed bag of SBAs for a little over face in a Heritage auction. I found out it is pretty hard to sell these types of coins in large quantities, almost everyone i talked to told me to take them to the bank and deposit them. I did eventually get lucky and one of the companies that advertises in the back of coin world ran an ad looking for BU SBAs so I was able to get rid of them. I also learned that flipping coins on ebay is alot of work and did not seem to be very fun.

I recently had a novice numismatist ask me what area of "numistology" I'm most interested in.
