I don't know the appraised value...but I'll offer my opinion on the situation...if the deal was a steal you would have likely bought it already because you seem itching to do it. So it's likely a slightly or possibly significantly below "market price" deal so you may have to ask yourself why this seller would be willing to make such a deal on a classic card such as this? In my opinion because he thinks he's got a possible fish nibbling on the bait and that possible fish is you.
I know 50's, 60's and 70's Topps cards like the back of my hand and can spot a trimmed card from this era a mile away, but even with my knowledge on those cards, I wouldn't trust myself to effectively spot a trimmed T206 on a big money card like this and I wouldn't trust a T206 in a GAI slab.
That's my viewpoint......hopefully it all works out well for you.
The scan is too small to say for sure. As I [and others] stated before -- there is likely a compelling reason it is still in a GAI holder. Whether it is altered, overgraded or something different, it is basically a gamble, and it is not clear how much this gamble is worth.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
Ask the seller if he guarantees it will cross to a real company with a number grade. The card looks small to me but it isn't a great scan either. The other posters are right, there is likely a very good reason it is in a GAI flip and if you pay anywhere close to 7 or 8 money IMO it is a real gamble.
I guess that's my point. I would never ever spend serious money on a pre-war high-grade card in a GAI holder. Thus, I cannot predict the price. And since the [vast] majority of fellow collectors with whom I associate feel the same way, it is very hard to speculate on its value.
Since you have so much money at stake here, why don't you simply log on to VCP and find out the history of sales and prices for Ty Cobb high-grade T206 cards graded by GAI?

Could be a pressed out wrinkle that resurfaced over time - that would knock it down to a 5 at best, and if there was recoloring or slight corner doctoring that GAI missed...well you know what that means.
<<< The guy said he picked them up at an estate auction (which generally sounds fishy), but happens...>>>
Sure it happens, and then usually the seller is wise enough to maximize profit...selling to you at a discount would not be maximizing profit, and perhaps he has a "story" for that as well.
The T3 Matty (Mathewson) is the large (raw) gray border card next to the 1935 Wheaties Goose Goslin card,..... they are large, 5.75" by 8". Your other post shows the group pics,
I saw there are some decent cards mixed in with some low value stuff.
Ask the seller what he wants for the T3 Mathewson???
I wouldn't offer $1,000 based upon this single picture.

How about you post several, high resolution pics?
If this were a +/- $100 risk, I would have no problem giving a estimation based upon that picture. On a several thousand dollar one, not so much.

Greed combined with ignorance often turns out badly. Playing the big wheel at the casino, the biggest sucker bet in a casino, might be a better gamble than this proposed purchase. If you do it, I hope that I'm wrong.

Statistically, I've been told it was the Let It Ride game, then slots.

Honestly it looks overgraded, lower left corner looks dinged. Like I said at most you could get is probably PSA 6 money. This guy probably knows max value and has probably peddled it to other dealers and was rebuffed.
Most people can't offer you an opinion because most of these types of cards have disappeared. Either into other companies holders or busted out as raw. If this guy has PSA AND GAI cards then I would be very skeptical that it hasn't been through one or two reviews already.
Only bright side I see is that it is in a first graded holder and Mike Baker probably graded it. Thats why my first guess its just an overgrade not a trimmed or altered card.

I have actually purchased GAI cards before, and I am trying to cross over to SGC. (Good luck to me there!) I think you would typically dock 1 grade due to it being in a GAI holder. I wouldn't crack the slap and re-submit the card, but if I could buy the card for PSA6 price, I would try to cross it over to PSA (or SGC) 7, and who knows, it may go through. If it does, you already have made 1 grade level in profit. If the card does not cross over, just sell it on ebay at GAI8, at a discount from PSA or SGC8. Probably someone will bite. If you can only buy the card at PSA7 prices, I would seriously think about buying the card b/c you might come out net zero or even lose money b/c of the fees to sell the card.
Thats what I thought you would do. I hope it works out for you, but you had a lot of people telling you to not buy it. I think you had your mind made up when you posted a couple of threads. I think you were looking for someone to say its legit and buy the collection. Like I said I hope it is a good buy and keep us posted, let us know what it crosses over to.
One more thing. I think that the people calling you "ignorant" was because you were not listening to the advice they were giving you. Again I hope it all works out in the end.
are you going to update this forum, regardless of what happens when you try and cross/flip the cards?

oh please stop with the silly retorts about the word "ignorant" okay? - the word "ignorant" doesn't have to be derogatory, and it wasn't meant to be derogatory...it was meant as one word to condence your own above comment.
<<< After meeting the person and finding out his background, he seems like a trustworthy person to me. >>>
This could also be referred to as ignorant. Why would some stranger give, YOU, such a great deal?
<<< although I am always suspicious of most strangers >>>
I think you let your greed interfere with your better judgment - that's my opinion...I hope it works out well for you.
Ignorant and greedy - sorry but I'm sticking with that viewpoint so go ahead and prove that wrong...I honestly hope you do...let us know how it all works out....if you flip the cards and make a large profit, here's to ya.
Did you meet the person? What was he like? AGE sex ect.? Did he tell how much he had in them or any other info that might explain more about this craigslist type sale?
Love to see the cards as this is the type of things definitely makes the adrenaline pump. Hope it works out for you, and sounds like you know the risk. No way I crack the Cobb FWIW.
I bought a large collection a few years ago that was way out of my league, but it ended up being a good deal. Just some anxious moments with waiting on the grades to pop.
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.
<< <i>1. OK, so we won't argue over whether ignorant is offensive (because I can see both sides), but certainly greedy is probably uncalled for.
2. Good deals are not an every day occurrence, but they happen. People want quick cash. People don't understand exactly what they have, etc. In this case, the guy bought this stuff at an estate sale from a man that died for $5k, and sold it for $6500, so he was happy with his $1500 profit. I have done plenty of deals like that in the past. Usually they are on a smaller scale, but not always. For example, I bought a boatload of wax boxes on EBay a few months back for $5k, and immediately flipped it to Steve at BBCE for a $2k profit. These types of things exist. $300 profit opportunities are available every day. $3k less often and $10k even less often. I am going to guess that there are plenty of people on this board who make varying amounts all of the time.
3. I will post pics.
4. Finally, does anyone see the irony in some commentators saying I paid too much and others (or one other) not supporting the purchase because they were not sure why anyone would ever give me such a good deal? >>
Hey, as Gordon Gekko once said, "Greed is good"
As stated...it's all opinion based on the little information given about the details of the deal. Since you already bought it and you're a CU member, we're all rooting for you to do well.
Awesome, glad you bought the collection. As others have stated it was pretty obvious you wanted to, so I'm glad you made the leap. Yeah, sometimes you can get burned doing that but life is for living. Or something like that
Looking forward to the pics later tonight. Also, my 2 cents on the Cobb is to really know what you have you're at some point going to have to crack it out. Yeah, I know...that's gonna take stones the size of grapefruits, but PSA seems to reject a lot of cards in other cases (esp GAI). I say crack and submit (and pray!!) . Good luck!
LOL. But what about what I asked. Can you give a little info on the seller? Yes we know he bought them in an estate sale which seems way odd but It can happen. but with the cards you listed the odds just go way way up. and then having someone only sell all of them after buying them in an estate sale for almost estate sale prices. I dont know. If you are gecko? I know he left the net54 boards bc of this kind of drama dependency. And he has kids. Oh yeah he would almost reply to every reply in a matter of minutes. With someone spending 6,500 dollars and knowing so much about grading and making a profit why so long to register on PSA?
So are you now under a new name on the net54 boards? If you are not gecko what name do you go by at the net54 boards? No reason not to answer this question if you have nothing to hide.

thus a bigger loss of $$
IMO, if you cant get a written guarantee it will cross with a number grade.... I would ONLY Pay PSA-2/3 prices for a GAI-8 for this fact alone
I dont like surprises, and always think worst case scenario
PS what about the raw T3 Matty card they had??? Id be on that one far more than that risky T206 Cobb
