PVC damage...yet "slabbed"

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,371 ✭✭✭✭✭
How does obvious PVC damage on an otherwise decent coin get into a slab? Not obvious at the time of encapsulation and THEN turns inside the holder? If this is the case, how can any company make any sort of guarantee.

    My example:

(I expect that the chemical is on the coin, but hasn't started to attack the metal at the time of slabbing. I think it's a nice gesture for PCGS to offer to clean it up for you. In my case I just cracked it out and soaked it in acetone myself, since it isn't a terribly valuable coin. looks fine now.)

Same is true on ngc & anacs slabbed coins... I see them all the time. image

will any company guarantee the coin in these cases? I think not... since storage contidions can vary widely...etc...

What does NGC and PCGS do with coins sent back to them with PVC contamination? Who pays for the cleanup and how?
  • You do. PCGS wont "fix" PVC if the value is less than like $ 1000. I've tried several times with Peace $ vams and David's exact words to me were "We're not a cleaning service" Who pays... You do... Who has to crack it and take on the risk of another grade.... You do....

Don't get me started on this topic... image

Haven't they slabbed a contaminated coin? They aren't responsible? How about if coin is damaged from the PVC?

I wonder if that goes for NGC as well. I am going to bring a 1917 25c with PVC green on it to NGC at the LB show. My NGC dealer told me to bring it to them and they would take care of it , but I guess we will see.

Unfortunately, PCGS has no official stance on the subject. If HRH told you that, then he is wrong. I have had PVC removed from PCGS coins worth well under $1000 on several different occasions. The trouble is, PCGS sometimes does a very poor job at PVC removal, leaving you with an overdipped POS that was better off before they compounded the coins problems.

PCGS removed my PVC laden coins on silver coins at no charge. They did a great job.

On copper coins, I can imagine it would be much more difficult to do so. Probably impossible.

  • I had ANACS refuse to holder a cent due to PVC even as damaged

Sent a 1939 S Arkansas NGC MS 65 back to NGS because of PVC damage on the reverse. This was three weeks ago. No questions asked.
It took two weeks to get it back and now it is blast white. It use to have a nice gold tone to it. I had to pay for the insurance and the shipping.

I just took some major PVC off of two quarters and sent them back in with the tags. It will be interesting to see if they come back the same grades.

Can understand your concern but the cases are not air tite and the environment can cause any coin to change all you can do is everything you can to keep your coins in a good dry environment.
I think a lot of times doctored coins get in slabs and in a few month kinda fall apart.I was thinking about useing my wifes vacume food sealer for some coins I have wanted to put in long term storage.
    Any one ever try that?
