93 Down--1967 Topps Pirates Stickers Completed in PSA 8 or Better

My 93rd set completed in PSA 8 or better is 1967 Topps Pirates Stickers--a 33-card set of Pittsburgh Pirates from the 1967 season.

I bought both the 1967 Red Sox and Pirates Stickers sets raw at auction about 12 years ago from Mr. Mint. About 6 years ago I sent both sets in to PSA for grading. As usual it was a mixed bag with most psa 8 or better but perhaps a third of each set rated less. I was able to complete the Red Sox Stickers set in about 3 years in 8 or better but the Pirates set was tougher as the stickers are considerably rarer. I was down to 3 stickers about 2 months ago when I was able to pick up Dennis Ribant and Happiness is a Pirate Win at auction. Last week a favorite dealer of mine who searches the world for cards I need but wishes to remain anonymous notified me he had found the Billy O'Dell--a pop 3 in 8 with 1 higher.

With the O'Dell my set is complete at an 8.78 set rating with 4 PSA 10s, 12 PSA 9s and 17 PSA 8s. This puts me 1st on the PSA Set Registry but barely ahead of legendary dealer/collector Levi Bleam of 707 Sportscards fame. Shane Leonard, a collecting friend retired his set with a 9.02 set rating. Hopefully Don Spence won't turn to this set next . I will let mine rest at this level.

This represents my 93rd set overall with each card PSA 8 or better and my 39th baseball set. The goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in PSA 8 or better. I appreciate the help of all collectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goals.

    Thanks guys for the conrats.

    Shane,

I didn't know that--call be directly next time. I still need the 3 64T stand-ups--Baldshun, Hunt and Woodeshick

    Dave,

I am making progress but it is not easy finding the cards as I am dealing for the most parts with cards that are in very low pops. The museum would be when I retire which is at least 2-3 years away and possibly more. Its also an idea--not a definate thing as I am not sure if I would want to be tied to one area.

    Doug,

You'll have to come to NJ--I would be happy to show you my collection any time. It would probably be a 90 minute drive for you.

    BPorter,

Sorry--I don't keep extras of the sets I finished. I have an extra 9 oc of O'Dell but thats it. I do have a scanner but I can't figure out how to use it. If I do I will scan the Clemente for you.

Congrats Jim. When are you going to expand your horizons and build a 1969 Topps or 1971 Topps baseball set? image
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
    Gemint,

1969 is in progress but I still need 200-plus cards or so(ugh). 1971 I have raw with stars and semistars ungraded. I think if I went for that I would just buy an existing graded set and sell my raw set. From my experience PSA is pretty tough on the 71s.
