The die sinker was Conrad Heinrich Küchler and Matthew Boulton was the manufacturer. This token was perhaps Boulton's favorite.

The Stort Navigation was authorized by an Act of Parliament and extended from the river Lea near the village of Rye to the Town Mill in Bishop's Stortford. It formally opened on the 21st of October, 1767.

Sir George Jackson 1725-1822 later known as Sir George Duckett, secretary to the navy board 1758, second secretary to the Admiralty 1766-82, Judge Advocate of the Fleet, and MP for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis 1766-8 and Colchester 1790-6. Friend and associate of Captain Cook who named Port Jackson in New South Wales and Point Jackson, New Zealand after him. Made in 1796, delivered to Jackson by Matthew Boulton in May and June 1796.

These can be found in amazing condition and the bronzed proofs are magnificent!

farthing - Thank you & well noted. I find the perspective landscape on this this token most unusual and appealing. My photograph did no justice to this piece, unfortunately. It is one that I will have to reshoot to get both the blue hues in toning and the deep earthen copper brown. I was very happy to find the painting by Constable for the background image; Boat—Building Near Flatford Mill, 1815. As a very modest collector I'm proud to have this piece as a sample in my collection. Of course your posts blow this out of the water - pun intended.

    I'll bet they are.

Even circulated, it's an interesting piece.
