It doesn't say if they've settled on the graders yet. This will be interesting.

Too late Kat. PCGS hired some locals:

This is a very smart move. France has many beautiful coins. My question is whether PCGS in France will designate French coins using French catalog/book? France numismatists and dealers are familiar with Jean Lecompte (French Colonial Coinage) or Victor Gadoury (French Coinage and Medals), so instead of using Krause catalog number like KM-1 or KM-2, start using Lec. 1, Lec. 2 or Gad. 1...; and not to downgrade Krause World Coins Catalog or anything but their France/ French Colonies sections are inaccurate and incomplete; as the standard for the rare coins industry, PCGS needed a change in its reference materials!
  • I assume members of the Collectors Club ( ie individual submitters ) will still have to send to US as usual. Paris will be no help to me as there are no PCGS dealers here on the Isle of Man. If it is a method to make collector members submit via a dealer it will be hello NGC and CGSGB and goodbye PCGS.

PCGS doesn't put KM numbers on its labels. But maybe the local authorized dealers will have an effect on grading, perhaps closer to some difficult series' standards.

Tony you can still submit through a UK dealer. If said dealer does not charge extra, why not avoid the agony?

Does PCGS have any other offices outside the US? I know NGC has one in China.

It makes sense from a business perspective to try and open up the market for slabbed coins overseas. However, it seems to be my experience that most collectors of foreign coins prefer their coins raw. Do you think this is changing, or do you think that TPG's with presences overseas will help to change this?
  • I have submitted many hundreds of coins as a club member to the US without any problems. When I moved home the Customs dept phoned me to confirm that I was the same person so that they would not delay the boxes.
I see no advantage in posting coins to another country ( the UK is technically another country in customs terms to the Isle of Man ) to then be posted on by a dealer.
I still wait to hear if I will be banned from posting direct to PCGS.

If I'm reading this right, the coins will be graded on site in Paris. Does that mean that when I can't get a coin graded "right" in CA, I can bring it to Paris to get a shot at a different team of graders? Or will the "SecurePlus" technology somehow be used to thwart my efforts?

If SecurePlus™ is used in Paris will it be better than the Maginot Line? image
