What is Your Opinion Of Big Trading?

Has anyone ever made some big trades? I'm Not talking about commons for commons or a Ripken RC for a 1969 Yaz. I am talking about trades like a 55 Clemente for a AAron Rookie or a PSA set for a bunch of superstars.
I think trading or trading with a bit of cash is the way to go. I just dont see many BIG traders out there. Are you guys out there? Many times opinions expressed that many would like to own even a beat up 52 Topps Mantle but could not afford it. I believe that with the high fees associated with an expensive card like that, a dealer may make a trade- cash deal if asked to avoid that big fee. If you are looking for a card like that, I bet you have some good tradeable stuff.
I have on occassion, been trading for years with many dealers and it has worked out for both of us. I have no problem giving the traded advantage if I know how much i have in the card and I really want the trade item.

I've made one "big" trade in my life. Back in the early 1980s I traded a 1953 Topps baseball complete set, for a T206 Ray Demmitt (St Louis) and a 1954 Bowman Ted Williams.

I wouldn't have any problem making a trade like that again. It's just that right now, I really don't have anything big I want to get rid of.

I love to trade but at shows the dealers want to give you 10% of book while they try to charge you full book value. I am trying to focus on only yankee cards and I have a lot of high $$ HOF cards (Wiliams, Clemente, Robinson...) if someone has old Yankee cards they want to get rid of.

I'd like to trade some of my vintage set for one iconic card, have found too many willing traders to do the same. It would be ideal if someone wanted break-up value since more people can afford smaller $ cards, or they just wanted the set

The Biggest Trade I'm aware of is part of hobby lore now. I am sure someone here can recount the details more precisely...but it was something on the order of a near set of E107s for a Honus Wagner.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I have done a number of big card trades, the largest I traded away a card valued over 6k, I have also traded for a 55 clemente psa 7 and many other high dollar cards. For me its just been finding the right situation where we both have cards the other wants, then you just work to get a deal down. I have found that if its a card I really want I give more to the trade and when its the other way around I expect to get a little extra in the deal. I will say I had an easier time when the market was going up, I have found it harder to trade in this downward moving market.

I would think that people would trade more in a down market.

Was that the Scott Brockleman trade at the National a few years ago -- in which he traded with Richard Masson (Sic) (I belive that's his name). Both parties were very happy with that trade

I ABSOLUTELY love trading!!!!! Too bad I don't have anything high end available for trade but if I did I would love to trade for a bunch of smaller stuff!

    spazzy,
do you have something in mind? i am in the process of getting rid of a large quantity of 1975-1980 cards in PSA 9 with a few 10's. i would trade any or all for something.

    thanks

I am more of a vintage trader. I have noticed that folks dont trade too much. You may see something special soon on the BST boards, but that was not the reason for the post. I think that cards were called trading cards so why not trade them? If you really like something, why not trade what others want and many times it can be replaced. A few years ago, I traded for one of my favorite cards of all times . I gave up a PSA 3 Bowman Mantle as part of the trade and payment. I know in the future I can get a card like that back...maybe in a better grade....The chase is lots of fun as well as neogotiating.

I feel your pain brother. I've also been focusing on Yankee cards from the 50's & 60's for several years now. I had a '56 Clemente in VG condition I got back in '96 but after I narrowed my focus to Yankees it just didn't fit in. I kept an eye out for a quality trade....it took me almost 10 years. Thankfully I did just trade it earlier this year for a nice '58 Mantle All Star. I doubt i'll be making any trades on that level again because everything high end I have now I want to keep.
