1992 Donruss Diamond King Super

This one came in the mail today. I mean, I couldn't let Geordie be the only one with a DK Super, right?

My girlfriend was excited that I was able to add the DK super to my collection, even after I told her how much it cost. Not too shabby, huh? She really wanted me to add the group hug emoticon, and I think she deserves that much. Here you go, Amy:
The DK Super will sit along side my Donruss Aqueous as the twin pillars of my collection. Here's that one, as well:

Are the white specks on the left side of the card near the border and also to the left of his top hand on the bat supposed to be on the Super? They don't seem to be on the normal card.
edit - I found the auction you won. You won that for quite a bit less than you were willing to spend the first time around, so that worked out very nicely. Now that you've got the '92 Super and the Aqueous, what's next on the radar?

<< <i>That is a cool addition, congrats to you, and Amy too it sounds like.

Thanks, guys. As Geordie said, this is the second example to show up in the last few months, which is really surprising. When I lost the first one, I figured it could be years before another surfaced. For those that are unfamiliar, these were salesman samples for a set that was never issued. No one knows how many were made or how many survived.
The couple that I have seen have had some white specks on the front - likely from having been stored in a binder for so long. I'm actually thrilled with the condition, but this card falls into the "any condition is fine" category for me. For comparison, a well-known Frank Thomas collector has one that looks like it's in a Chicago snowstorm.
As far as what's next...I don't know. These two have been at the top of my list for about 15 years, so it's hard to adjust. Honestly, I think the last of the tea discs would be the most exciting for me. There are others that would be more expensive, but I just love adding those silly little discs. Here's a link to my thread on those: 1980s Tea Discs

Jeff: I hate to admit it, but it was so long ago I can't remember!

Is anyone getting their examples graded? They seem like they are roughly on the same size as the 1984-1986 Topps Super cards, but obviously much higher quality and production.
Since they're being shown off...

I have always thought these were salesman samples, but I hadn't heard that they were specifically for a pitch to K-Mart. Interesting. It also looks like both the Ripken and Butler are in better shape than my Will. As you can see in my scan, there are a few white specks on it, though not nearly as many as on the Frank Thomas. I don't think they detract from the card at all, and in some ways they even add to the story a bit. I like to think that mine was carried inside a Donruss salesman's binder for a few months.
Anyway, thanks for sharing the scans, guys.
Here's the full checklist. A couple of HOFers, but not a lot of huge names. Frank and Cal are in the first tier, I'd say. Molitor, Boggs, Bagwell and Clark in the second. Of course, all it takes are two dedicated Julio Franco fans to push an auction well into the hundreds. Then again, if there's only one person that sees the auction, these could easily go for the minimum bid. I'm generally not a checklist guy, but I'd take the DK Super Checklist, if I could get one at a good price.
Quite an interesting set...

<< <i>So... Ironmanfan, you want to sell yours right? *waves hand like a jedi* >>
[Someone out there] has one.
Makes me feel like I got a deal on my Will Clark...
(good luck!)
Can you imagine being a salesperson going to a store owner or exec. and giving them a super size checklist? Or even a Scott Sanderson or Hank Morrison card? If they were produced in equal quantities, I imagine that a number of the commons have been tossed.
<< <i>If they were for mgmt. / execs., I wonder if this is one of those issues [perhaps like N173 cabinets] whereby it is actually easier to find the Will Clark, Cal Ripken and Frank Thomas's than the Checklists and Greg Swindell's.

That's a really interesting thought, and makes a lot of sense. (It's actually Hal Morris...I'll edit my earlier post.)
Can someone with access to the pop report see how many of these PSA has graded? I was somewhat surprised to see that there's no registry set listed. Man, what other 1990s major company set could compete with this one on sheer difficulty and rarity?

<< <i>Any ideas on how to come across a Felix Jose? I am watching Ebay, but that might take forever for one to come up. Anybody have any leads on one? >>
Patience. That's the only way with these. Hopefully one'll turn up eventually...
I've seen the following either for sale or in collections:
Clark x2
Ripken x2
McGriff x2
Thomas x2
Butler
Franco
I don't recall seeing any others.

Super interesting. Any chance you'd want to share how much they went for?
The Franco I believe was closer to $200, but I don't remember the details.
They area in an Ultra Pro page that fits four cards to give you an idea of the size. The first two cards are "The Elite Series" 1993 Ryne Sandberg and Dave Winfield. The weird thing about these is these have serial #'s so were they box toppers or something. The Sandberg is #2 of 20 and #'d out of 5000 and the Winfield is #17 out of 20 and #'d out of 5000.
The other four cards are the same size and come from a subset called 90's Dominators and serial #'d out of 10,000. I have Frank Thomas, Ken Griffey Jr, Fred McGriff and Joe Carter of those cards. I bought all six cards for six dollars and just thought they were different.
Does anybody have any information on these type bigger cards?
<< <i>Those were indeed box toppers in retail promotions at WalMart...similar to the intent of the 1992 Diamond Kind Supers...but the DKs were never put into production, so estimates of their quantities tend to fall under 10.
Thank you for the reply and it sounds like not so rare items but I love the Elite series from Donruss (1991-1993 ones anyway).
