bidding on PSA N.Ryan's on eBay - got question ...

I am just getting into PSA cards and although I am a PCGS coin collector at heart ; i'm getting some thrills thinking about owning some cards .

In the coin world , there is a real problem with fake coins, fake holders, etc

A novice like me could reason that it would be kinda easy to reproduce a cardboard square with a picture on it ...........

Are fake cards something you fellers worry about ?

  • Just like coins, you really should buy from reputable sellers. Craigslist is a hot spot for counterfeits! Good luck, and nice to have you on the message board.

Yeah there are fake cards floating around around out there. A couple that come to mind are the Michael Jordan RC and the 1990 Frank Thomas NNOF. If you buy cards in PSA holders, you won't really have to worry about it. They're pretty good at spotting fakes and won't holder them.

As for fake holders, well, that's a whole nother story but I don't feel like getting banned from these boards and watching this thread go poof.

For the most part, both PCGS and PSA collectors share the same concerns.

As for fake holders/slabs.....yes, unfortunately they do exist. As long as you know what to look for though, such as "frosting" on the slab's edges, and what the font on the flip should look like, you'll probably be ok.

Just do your research and stick to reputable sellers, and I really doubt you'll run in to any major problems.

In most cases, the older the card the harder it is to make a good fake.

Paper, printing technique, and age, are harder to duplicate well.

    Topps cards are not old.

    A "9" for $750.00????? NO WAY!

Are you sure it did not have a qualifier, like a "9 o/c"?

A nine goes for REAL BIG BUCKS!!!!

Those are both the same card (same cert number).

It's also not the best 9 out there.....it is OC (not enough for the OC designation though), and it has a break in the black border on the upper-right.

That is a weak 9 in the Ebay link. You did well to avoid it. There is a nice one I believe in the current mile high auction. MJ

It is also in an older generation flip. The card today would probably grade a Psa 8 or possible Psa 8.5 .
It is just to oc left to right to be considered in a Psa 9 mint holder. Imho

Good luck, a good guy to collect!

I just dropped the price on mine, but as long as that dog '9' sticks around, then everyone will think that $700 is the going rate for a 1969 Topps Ryan in a PSA 9! Darn it VCP!!

Mine is on Ebay right now....99 cents, no reserve!

Still a steal...and better looking than the ugly one that brought $710.

It's OK...I feel like the BIG LOTS of the graded card world. The only people bidding on my cards are resellers and bargain hunters. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just I have given SOOOOOOO many cards away lately, that it is making me lose faith in Ebay (at least in the auction format anyway!)....

The biggest problem out there with fake PSA holders are what have become known as the Craigslist fakes, because they appear to have been orignally sold there. The easiest way to tell, if you're experienced with PSA cards, is that they used a wrong font on the flip. Search for threads on this board on "Craigslist fakes" for more information, including pictures.
