I...couldn't...resist its siren song

It looks like you smelted when you heard its siren song.

Sheffield Smelting apparently has direct roots going back to the 1700s. They were bought out by another company called Thessco several years ago. I'd love to know when this bar was made, so I emailed Thessco off of their website last night to ask if they had any idea based on stamp, serial number, style.

Would you believe I got an answer back just now?

    Dear Sir,

I am sorry but we do not have any records of Sheffield Smelting Company serial numbers. The only definite information that I can give is that no Sheffield Smelting Company bars have been made since 1984 when Thessco took over the site.

    Best regards,

    Andrew Reichwald
    Thessco

Something about the bar just looks 1960s or even earlier. But I'll take definite pre-1984 image

Like the visual much better on the bar in second round of pics.image

Rare to get a reply from the company. Are they still selling silver bars?

Looks like they do, but I believe it's just 1,000 LBMA/good delivery bars. It is rare and somewhat unexpected. I emailed Reed and Barton back in September of last year asking for info on my Mayflower medals. They responded that they'd research and get back to me.

    I'm still waiting image
