1752 Thaler. Genuine?

harashaharasha Posts: 3,113 ✭✭✭✭✭
I came across this item while exploring the world of thalers struck during the reign of Maria Theresa. I would appreciate the comments of the membership and have posted the images in a larger size than usual, as I have concerns about this coin. Thanks in advance.

As I am sure others will say, it is hard to tell from pics. It has a few flags for me as well, I hate seeing raised spots, unless it was struck with some very rusted (pitted) dies and then circulated heavily to get some dings and digs as well. I think I would pass on that one if it were being offered to me. I agree with your assessment, I have concerns about that one. Phone EEE in my opinion

Possible casting bubbles, and the tone looks all wrong, almost like copper-nickel... just my opinion.

Since it is not irreplacable, I'd pass.

I'm always more comfortable about attributing a Maria Theresa if I can see the edge, but my gut says the previous posters have it right.

I think the coin is o.k., just struck from rusted dies. Having said that I'd like to know the weight and look at it in person. If the seller has a good reputation and a return policy buy it, if not pass.

Bubbly fields, even on the lettering (see right of reverse), soft central strike and dull for its condition. I'd say its a cast copy.

Besides the bubbly surface, the denticles look pretty uneven.

Seriously- IMHO, It is a pass based on the overall appearance

Aethelred, the vendor is very reputable, a member of the IAPN in fact, and his return policy is liberal. As for the weight, I weigh it at 27.9 grams. A different type from the same mint, around the same time, lists the weight as 28.06 grams, so I am comfortable with the weight, at least.

satootoko, I am attaching four pictures of the rim. By the way, the vendor is from your neck of the woods, I believe.

  • I think it's genuine. The edges look a bit banged up but it looks good to me.

Personally I think the coin is a cast coin.

    1) The cast bubbles
    2) The letters looks bubbly and wavy.
    3) The denticles look soft and bumpy

I've included an image of a genuine coin for comparison.

  • Personally, I would hold out for a nicer one...
