Would a TPG body bag this boy for artificial toning?

What do you think image

From the Colin Cooke collection......

BMC 1444. Uncirculated with fantastic yellow/mauve/bluey toning.

Ex Carnegie Museum, SCA 30 3/6/1983 Lot 205 (part)

NT all the way but I'll be honest-that's a jarring image. I'm not sure I can appreciate that
color combination. Very nice coin otherwise.image

    The natural interaction of the yellow toning in George's hair but not on his wreath;
the way the yellow touches only Britannia's hair, upper chest and neck
but not her helmet or garment would be almost impossible to duplicate
artificially. Real color flows and creeps, a fascinating interplay between raised devices
    and fields. This flows.

To me this coin appears NT but perhaps some kind of environmental pollution
    caused that particular color combination.

As to whether or not it would BB is another question. I've seen some terrific coins shown here that
were BB and I couldn't believe it.

    So, yes, probably.image

Ed to add: but with a strong provenance to support it, maybe not.image

From that image I would say PCGS would 'Questionable Color' that coin.

PCGS does not seem to like yellow.

Send Don Willis a PM referring to this thread/image.

Ask if including a printout of the auction link/image/pedigree info, invoice, etc. would help to establish "legitimacy".

BTW, Who was SCA 30? Also, the existence of an auction image from SCA would also help.

Otherwise, they'll likely bag it, but it is legit.......no question, and it is much more vivid than your the image shown here.

P.S. If you bid on that coin directly from the Cooke sale, I kindly contributed to driving the price up. image
  • Thanks Mac. I couldn't begin to afford it.

  • Ole George looks like a surfer dude with that golden blonde hair and headband!

OK, I know it's not a headband, but it sorta fits the look.

I would say definite NT on that and a true beauty! PCGS would most likely "Gen" it, although I think it would be well received ATS.
