Rank the iconic vintage RC's. My top 25.

As my priorities shift in collecting, it got me to wondering how my priority list for vintage RC's would shake out. Obviously I'd like them all - wouldn't we all - but ya gotta prioritize somewhere. So I decided, in between steaks and waffles and giving Baxter treats, to do a list. Cause people love lists. Here's mine, give me yours. Hope you like it.

1. 52 (Topps) Mantle, PSA 5 or higher.
2. 54 Aaron, PSA 8. Most undervalued card around.
3. 63 Rose, PSA 8.
4. 55 Clemente, PSA 8. Though I'm quite happy with the 7.5 I own.
5. 51 Bowman Mantle, PSA 7 or higher.
6. 51 Bowman Mays, PSA 7 or higher.
7. 54 Banks, PSA 8. Another undervalued card.
8. 55 Koufax, PSA 8.
9. 48 Bowman Musial, PSA 8.
10. 54 Kaline, PSA 8. Trending down to $1000 and an absolute steal right now.
11. 57 Frank Robinson, PSA 8. Ranked a little higher than y'all might list it, but it's one of my favorite cards of all time.
12. 57 Brooks Robinson, PSA 8. Another of my faves.
13. 59 Gibson, PSA 8.
14. 68 Ryan, PSA 8. I hate this card because I've never found one I've been happy with.
15. 67 Seaver, PSA 8.
16. 69 Reggie, PSA 8.
17. 55 Killebrew, PSA 8. Amazes me you can buy this card for less than $800.
18. 58 Maris, PSA 8. I like Indians and I like Maris. So there!
19. 60 Yaz, PSA 8.
20. 67 Carew, PSA 8.
21. 62 Brock, PSA 8.
22. 65 Carlton, PSA 8. Sometimes for less than two hundred buck
23. 68 Bench, PSA 9. Steal for less than $800.
24. 48 Bowman Berra, PSA 7 or higher. I'm showing a bias against Bowmans here, but don't get me wrong they are great cards.
25. 49 Bowman Campanella, PSA 8.

Not a pre-war guy. But yeah, if I was he'd be on the list and so would some dude with a girlish first and last name.

How about Leaf or Bowman Jackie Robinson RC, or Satchel Paige 49 Leaf or Bowman? I'd put them in there before Campy. I'd probably drop Carew also, outside of the fact that it is a a high number.

But that's quite an awesome list of cards!

Maybe you left it off because it's from the 70s, but I'd include the 1973 Schmidt in there before a few others.

Just a note, the 52 Topps Mantle is not his RC. I don't know if that throws off your list or if you want to just switch it to his 51 Bowman.

    Agreed

Would 2001 Pujols rc's be considered vintage?
  • RonBurgundyRonBurgundy Posts: 5,491 ✭✭✭
I debated on the 73 Schmidt. I'd certainly rank it as the best RC of the 70's.

I noticed it was all baseball.....my list would include Jim Brown and Joe Namath......

Not sure which one I would bounce...but the 60 McCovey would have to be on my top 25...(that is if I had one!) image

I would try to work Spahn in there, somewhere.

I'd put a 49 bowman jackie robinson in there somewhere.

I'd put the nolan ryan closer to #12, maybe bump kaline down 3 notches.

    -52 Topps Eddie Mathews!!

I'd try to put feller or spahn in there somewhere.

    Ron,
To me your list is almost exactly what I would say. There's only 1 I would certainly add. I would have to put a Jackie Robinson Leaf or Bowman in there.

Pretty complete list. A few additional cards that came to mind:

    52 Topps Eddie Matthews
    51 Bowman Whitey Ford
65 Topps Tony Perez (had to do it, Reds fan)
    66 Topps Jim Palmer
    58 Topps Orlando Cepeda
    57 Topps Don Drysdale

I would rank the '55 Clemente PSA 8 ahead of the '63 Rose.

and i'm with Hooks on the Drysdale RC, i dunno where i'd find a place for him on such a fine list, but 'tween him and Gibson, i personally don't recall watching anyone more dominating on the mound.

I have absolutely no idea why you rank these with PSA grades. Wouldn't a PSA 10 of any of these be the best? I would just stink to ranking them based on overall hobby appeal. The PSA grades are unnecessary.

i think he's trying to establish a plateau.....beyond most of these as graded, i'd the large majority of us could only dream of owning one in a higher graded slab, but lotsa those are locked up in the Registry(PD)......certainly a 10 of any would be a fainting spell waiting to happen. image

    BTW Mike, you don't stink.

I like the list minus KALINE and BROCK, both grosly overrated IMO.

ALSO, totally disagree with "cincyredlegs" additions . . .

Thanks Jeff, I appreciate that! image Although I stand by my point - take all those cards down to 7's or 6's or whatever. The list would still look the same if all were dropped by one grade, no? That's my only point about the PSA aspect.

And LMK if you have any more 61 Fleer beaters that I can trade for. I want to get some of those guys knocked off my auto list!!!

I didn't mean that I would replace the cards on Ron's list with these cards. Just saying after reading his list, a few more cards came to mind.

Come on Ronnie, you need a 52 Topps Eddie Mathews on that list. PSA 8 shouldn't set you back too much.

Vintage? last 1/3rd of Baseball History?

Your list has cards only from Bowman and Topps, both very very verrrry common! ....and not really vintage at all IMO

Even then, and staying with bubblegum...... the top card should be the 1949 Leaf Satchel Paige

    Everyone collects differently,
For PostWar, these would be on my list of MOST WANTED

Hank Aaron - 1952 Indianapolis Clowns PC
    Dick Williams - 1950/51 Mejoral
Luis Aparicio - 1952 Venezuelan League
Stan Musial - 1946 Sears PC
Monte Irvin - 1948/49 El Indio
Tom Lasorda - 1950 Big League Stars (WWG)

and for Schmidt, Rice and Gossage, Id rather have those very rare Puerto Rican League cards/stickers over the very common Topps/O-Pee-Chees

    Obviously, I like Rare! image
