1964 Washington Quarter With Copper Showing

This stack of quarters is:
8-1964
2-1962
1-1961

One of these 1964 quarters has copper showing wherever there is a disturbance to the reeded edge.
None of the other coins show any copper even though they have more nicks and bangs on them.
None of the other 1964's show copper anywhere that they are nicked or scratched.
I don't have any more 1964's to compare.
My photo skills are not great but under a loupe you can easily spot the copper.
Is this visible copper normal for 1964's?

Looks like nothing, but I would weigh it to see if the weight is different.

Seems to be bouncing around far too much to be a clad sandwich.

    It's rust/corrosion, or discoloration.
It's caused by the coin coming in contact
with something, not that there's anything
wrong with the composition of the planchet.

It's not an error planchet of any type.

That one silver quarter might have been
stored in a metal tube, or something similar.

    Hope this helps....

    What Fred said.

Wait one minute & I'll show you some of my silver coins to compare.
It is merely toning starting to occur.

The first one is a row of quarters, the second is a roll of kennedy halfs, both from 1964

Is it possible to have a clad 1964 Quarter ?

It most likely just looks like copper and is something like tone or rubbed off something else.

Sorry, but it's definitely not struck on a clad planchet. Look between the reeds and you'll see that there is no "copper" showing, and there would be on a clad planchet.

Just odd toning, like Fred said.

Yes, from what I've heard, but it's illegal to own. Dupont was doing experimental tests with making clad quarters in 1964.

Dupont didn't have any regular dies for testing and used the Gardiner's Island dies
and possibly some of the Martha Washington dies.

There is actually a 1964 clad quarter but it is unique. It is a Philly issue (unless it's
    also a mule).

Dude.......all you had to do was weigh it. Had it been real, you would have seriously lowered its value.

Wasn't a real 1943 copper cent scratched to see if was plated.
