Anhalt-Dessau 2/3 thaler?

So what's wrong with this picture? Other than I have no skills taking pics of coins image

Slab says 20 mark, but it is a half taler. Should have added that they got the 20 mark from "XX eine feine mark" which means it's a half taler. X eine feine mark for a full taler.

    3Mark
I'm traveling on memory and running out of fuel.
  • As far as I know, they didn't make any 20 Marks till the Kaiserreich era...
Are you going to have them fix it?

Wrong German State. Isn't that an Anhalt-Bernberg?

  • I believe you're correct Don.
Looks like a KM#72 2/3 Thaler from Anhalt-Bernburg to me...

We have winners! That is exactly what I was looking at! It's Anhalt Bernburg and while it is stamped as 20 ein feine mark it is actually a 2/3 thaler... So my next question is... Will NGC reholder it with the correct state and if so will they holder it as a 20 mark or 2/3 thaler? Will there be any cost to me for their mistake? (never done this before). I bought it sight unseen and am not real happy with the adjustment marks that carried over. The seller said it was an 1808 HS so I knew it wasn't what the slab said, but still paid a fair sum for the coin based on the NGC grade AU-58... I don't see it as an AU-58 because of the harsh adjustment marks that carried over to the minting process as well as slight wear on the high points. Don't get me wrong, it is a pretty coin but I don't think it deserves the grade (unless of course I'm selling it)! image

Hey Larry, Where did you come across the XX mark for a half and X for a full thaler? I don't recall ever seeing that and would like to follow up on that for my own edification. I never thought about it before, and haven't looked yet, but wouldn't it seem X=1/3 XX=2/3 and XXX = a full thaler? Just thinking out loud...

Thanks for the input guys! Let me know about the costs and your thoughts on how to proceed...

    Thanks,
    Rick

  • Rick,
They should reholder it with the correct State and denomination. I believe you might have to pay reholder fees as you bought it like that though...
I think it's a pretty coin too, and my guess is they liked the light toning and it looks to be pretty lustrous.
Sweet looking coin and a nice addition to any collection.
