PCGS Lowball 1854 Arrows 25c at Heritage sells at $160 hammer

Well, it hit the block and the hammer was $160. Guess the Price Guide will need some updating from the $12 value! image

Up for auction Sunday night, May 9. The prose is not mine, but shamlessly plagarized from Charlie Mead at Heritage:

We are now pleased, nay thrilled, to be able to offer the penultimate, actually subultimate, graded Seated Quarter with Arrows, an 1854 certified Poor 1 by PCGS. Frankly, this coin is as well worn as a coin can get and still be identifiable. One can read the date, the arrows, the denomination and see there is no mintmark, but other than that... This is a must have for those collectors assembling a "worst known" PCGS registry set.

Wow, this is a pop-4 coin......here's mine. Not as worn as the Heritage coin though.....

  • That Heritage coin is really amazing! The wear is so thorough, and yet the date is clearly visible, and the site where a mint mark would go is clearly Philadelphia. It's so perfectly Poor that it would make Crow and Tom Servo of Mystery Science Theater 3000 proud. It's the Ed Wood of 1854 quarters.

What's funny furthermore is a look at the price guide that Heritage posts for reference. I bet you this coin will sell for more than the PCGS price guide.

Wow, strong price. I made mine and it cost me $22 for the coin + grading fees. There is interest in pop-bottom coins.....

  • I have a 1932-D Washington Quarter in for a low-ball grade. All you can see are the humps of the 32 and the D mintmark. These are very tough and do have a market, if you can believe it!
