Cuba Castro Coins with and without holes (1962 40 Centavos)

I acquired the first of these Cuba Castro issue 1962 40 Centavos coins in the mid 1960's.
It had the holes drilled in it then.



I acquired this one recently without holes:



I do not know if the holes were a 1960's political statement or what.

The man on the coin is Camilo Cienfuegos, a Cuban revolutionary and friend of Fidel Castro.

Those holes look suspiciously like they're trying to form initials.

The reverse holes look like "FC".

"Freedom Club"?
