59 Topps Cards - same card with white and gray backs

I have run into several 59 Topps baseball cards that were issued with both white and gray backs. Is this common and in what part of the series did it happen? Card 226, Art Ceccarelli, was one I found. There are others. If you know, do you know the story behind why? Thanks.

Unsure why they made the variation. Different printers? Ran short of certain color card stock? Here's the info I have and believe it to be correct.

Thanks for the insight. Makes sense. Didn't realize that many had both backs. Any hidden value in any of the other mistakes you listed?
