For awhile it was just fake Trade dollars and Morgans in bogus PCGS slabs but it appears another wave is coming.

Check these out:

What i would like to know. And how are you the first to know about these?

Pat has always had a good feel for future collectibles.

First it was the "lowball" set, he was swooping up P-01 and F-02 things back before anyone thought anything about them.
Then it was the Cherrios Sac dollars. Pat was buying those things on ebay when they were going for less than 40 bucks a piece.
Then those colourful coins, same thing.

I see a day in the not too distant future when having a counterfeit 7070 set or counterfeit registry set will be bragging rights at beer night! image

These are not my coins. I've had a fascination with counterfeits since I was a kid and my "investigation" within the last few years had led me to some interesting sources for these.

Wave 3, IMHO, will be enhancing the quality of workmanship in the plastic and the insert and possibly the coins themselves.
It's no longer, "if", but "when".

That copper doesn't look good at all, nevermind the slab.

It is scary. This kind of stuff has the potential to serious damage the online market for coins. It is a relatively simple task to make a slab and insert, that is 99.5% visually perfect, especially considering how many generations of slabs are out there on the market.

As for the coins, one lucrative game might be to buy lower grade coins and put them in with a higher grade label, and use low quality pics. There are plenty of online folks willing to buy the grade on the holder.

Agreed. Fully Red prooflike 200 year old copper in an XF slab, who do they think that's gonna fool?

Yes, the insert and the coins are way off, especially for the skill levels of most of the forum members, but I think the real point of this thread is a wide range of various collector coins are going to be the target of the counterfeiters - which is scary, especially since they probably WILL get a lot less obvious as they 'improve their trade'.

  • Seeing a blazing red large cent in an XF holder should be a tip-off for most people.

True. I wonder how long it will take for the technology to catch up for the counterfeit insert to state MS64 RD instead of XF40.

I wouldn't count on this to protect anyone. It is a relatively simple task to get the fonts, the bar code, the hologram, the dimensions of the holder, to a high enough quality level that no one can tell from an online image.

There is a long and growing list of coins, raw or certified, that I won't buy online from unknown sellers. The fake coins and fake slabs are getting better and better.

They did a better job faking the slabs than they did faking the coins.image

    This is beyond serious.

Hopefully the perpetrators will be apprehended soon
and prosecuted to the fullest extent allowable by Law.

Most collectors would easily be fooled by this scourge.
  • I'd say PCGS could lose that plastic mark at the bottom-right corner of the slabs and replace it with a hologram mark, but then that would serve to raise the cost of doing business, so I don't know that I really want to say it.
