eBay Bidder to Block... heavy retractor

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,380 ✭✭✭✭✭
I normally wouldn't block a bidder for a retraction, but this buyer has placed--and retracted--bids twice each on two different auctions. Yes, four retractions on two auctions in under 24 hours. On one of them, his re-bid was higher than the initial "wrong amount." I'm not going to post the links to the auctions, but here are the retraction logs. The bidder is yellowrose4719.

Edit: This guy has 55 retractions in 28 days of being on eBay

Item #1:
yellowrose4719 ( 18Feedback score is 10 to 49) New eBay Member (less than 30 days) Retracted: US $75.00

Why would you block someone for this? It has no impact to you at all. I've seen countless "Block XXXX bidder" threads on these boards, and have not blocked a single person. I have never had a problem at all. In fact, some of my auctions were won by eBayers that board members posted that everyone should block, and there was not a problem.

To expose a reserve price is one reason.

To ruin a Buy-it-Now is another.

Paul, again, normally I wouldn't block a bidder for retracting bids. In fact, I've never done it before. In this case, however...

1- One of the auctions had other bids, and this action exposed someone else's bid, and then reverted the auction to a lower price. Suppose a bidder places a bid of $100 for an item. Bidder #2 is willing to pay $90, and no one on eBay will bid more except #1. Bidder #3 places a $125 bid to expose the original bid, and now the auction is over $100. Seeing this, bidder #2 declines to bid in the auction. When bidder #3 retracts, the price goes down to well below $100, but Bidder #2 doesn't notice since the auction is already out of mind. The original closing price without bidder #3's retraction would have been over $90; now it's under $90 since anyone else who comes along will bid less than #2's $90 max.

2- If buyers are watching an item and they see it has bids, then doesn't, then does again, it looks suspicious. I'd rather potential bidders not think that there's anything funny going on behind the scenes. Since he's a new eBayer, I also don't want people thinking I may be toying with my own auctions.

Again, normally I don't think twice about retractions. When he retracted for the first time I thought nothing of it. But seeing him retract 3 more bids--and not even on different items but rather items that he had already pulled from--leads me to believe he could do harm to the auctions if I keep letting him bid, especially in regards to point #1.

I can understand blocking chronic retractors. I've never understood the secrecy of the reserve. I have asked sellers in the past many times and only a small handful would tell me the reserve.

Or, knowing another bidder's maximum bid, a bidder who has no intention of buying the lot can bid can run the price up on this bidder, perhaps out of spite due to not being able to buy the item. The real bidder then accuses the seller of colluding with a shill (side thought -- are there known third-party eBay shilling services?) to force the price up to his maximum bid.

I should also add that this bidder has 55 retractions since joining eBay 28 days ago.

That is waaaay too much. Does sound like a reserve check. Needs banned from ebay.

What an @#$#@$ clown. I've blocked him too.

eBay could avoid all this by limiting bid retractions to 5 or so every 30 days.

actually, if you retract too many bids in a given amount of time, ebay will actually limit you to BIN items only. why it has not applied to this fellow is beyond me...
