Craigslist - Has anyone found anything worth keeping?

ShamikaShamika Posts: 18,785 ✭✭✭✭
Just recently, I've discovered Craigslist while looking for a place to rent in Kentucky. I have to say, the website is quite interesting with all the stuff people offer. So I'm wondering has anyone ever found any coins that were worthwhile?

Oh, I'm sure it's no better than eBay. But I think most of us have found a hidden gem on eBay from time to time. Thus my question.

adamlaneus recommended Craigslist when I was looking for a new camera body which I did purchase locally... it was a smooth issue free first transaction.

I bought 54 Proof Silver Eagles in OGP a local (within 1 hour) guy listed for sale. We met FTF, transaction was smooth, both left happy.

Scams abound on craigslist, so it's best to meet up FTF in a public place after talking on the phone and working out a deal before you meet. I've had good luck with craigslist so far, its been a good outlet for honest people to buy and sell stuff. Of course, you have to weed thru the riff-raff.

We have heard that fake coins in fake 3rd party holders can be found on Craigslist
pretty easily, so watch out for that.

I teach a class on CL at my work. It's great for furniture, apartments/houses, tickets, etc, but I've never trusted it for collectibles. Like others have said, too many scams concerning coins and gold. Worse yet, if something goes wrong on CL they tell you to call your local police department...at least eBay (sort of) tries to help.

I bought my MV Agusta on Craigslist, great transaction. Someone hit the bike and totalled it though, but I can't blame CL for that.

  • My wife and I have used Craigs List for numerous items, but never coins.

I will say that we have always met the other person FTF in a very public spot, such as a grocery store parking lot, etc., with lots of people around. There have been a few assaults and robberies in our area where the person goes to a specific private address, and are robbed at gun point. Of course the address is legit, but the homes are usually foreclosures, empty, etc., and they are robbed getting out of the car, or just pulling up in the drive.

I got a steal on an exercise bike on Craigslist. One of the best purchases I've made in years. I also picked up some hockey tickets last season that I couldn't get anywhere else. I've searched for coins on rare occasion just for grins, and there's nothing there.

I purchased my Olympus 500 with the 105 macro on craigslist. I've also purchased a few coins on there. One transaction went well, the other not so much so I've moved away from coins from individuals. Sometimes you can find estate sales and such that have coins in them that you can attend and see the coins in person. Biggest thing for me with craigslist is you have to be patient. Get a feel for the listings, how they are worded so you can sort through and pick out some of the legitimate ones. There are lots of good deals on there, just be patient, keep an eye on the listings and you can usually find something.

(I purchased many other things in addition to the camera and couple coins)

Be VERY careful on CL, like others have said, it is FULL of scams since there is no charge for ads. If you place an ad, you WILL be contacted by a scammer. If you respond to an ad, 2 to 1 it is also a scams. The biggest is someone trying to sell you something using some third party money escrow service like ebay. ALL of those are scams. Be very aware of underpriced "bargains" too.

There is good stuff to be found on Craigslist but I would stick to those you can pick up locally.

Coin wise good: 19** ms62 Saint for $1100, sold within 4 days on craigslist for $1600.
Coin wise bad: 1917 raw ddo. Cert'd as regular 1917 g8. (this was a year and a half ago, when I just started collecting. I didn't know my ... from a hole in the ground. I'm not perfect now but at least now I'm aware there are holes in the ground.)

Camera: Olympus e-500, 105mm Nikor macro, 10-40mm, 10-120mm, mem cards, etc for $400. Works great. Operator not so much.

It's not perfect, I agree, and buying coins on craigslist is getting harder and harder, but like ebay every once in a while a deal will poke its head up.

It's at least a good read and can be extremely funny at times, even if you don't buy anything.

    Just scan it for intertainment.
In large city areas, like the SF Bay Area, it is well known for overert drug and sex dealing. Yes, it is full of scams and data miners.

BTW, eBay owns a stake in CL. Which funny thing, they filed a lawsuit against themselfs image

I've sold a couple of bicycles on Craigslist. Never bought anything. I don't bother looking for coins because there are too many fakes out there, and I don't have near enough skill to spot them. (That would include fake slabs.)

I would think the big advantage of eBay has over CL is that eBay has feedback on the seller which helps the buyer evaluate the seller.

Oh, and my sister who has keys to my house is always selling stuff from for basemant and garage on CL. This weekend she handed me $75. She sold a 25 year old trolling motor for me I didn't even knew I had............MJ

Broadstruck- yes listings are free in almost all cities. CL- is really designed to sell locally. Cash and carry........

They generate most of their revenue from real estate listings in SF and NYC. Everything else is pretty much free. You really can buy ANYTHING on CL.

I used CL this weekend. I posted an AD to buy playoff hockey tickets with a desired seating request. The following morning ( the day of the game) I get a call for two seats on the glass row 1. I meet the dude at a designated public place located between us and paid $15 each over face. Ticket brokers wanted $150 each over face for seats not nearly as good.

There was someone arrested in CT this past week for taking out a CL add where he listed his neighbor's address and wrote that he was the woman who lived there and that he (she) wanted as much sex as possible on a certain date. A surprising number of men showed up at her house and she had to call the police because she didn't know what was going on. Unfortunately, one man went to the wrong address and when a 13-year old girl answered the door he started to molest her.image

  • I'm surprised that everyone is so down on Craigslist here.

My friend furnished his entire apartment from it. I have found my 2 apartments on there. I dont even want to fathom the money I have made and spent on Craigslist items. It's been way more efficient than any garage sale could be.

I've had good luck selling and found some nice groups of coins over the last couple years. Nothing amazing by this boards standards though image

I've sold bikes, tennis rackets, ww2 medals, army uniforms, books, computers, furniture, coins, silver, lamps, records, sports cards, comic books and everything else you can imagine.

Although if it were up to me, I'd encourage you all to pay attention to the negative comments and stay FAAAARRRR away from craigslist. Why worry about all those 'scams'. Let me take care of all that worry for you! image

It's just a matter of being smart about purchases/sales - I've ALWAYS chosen a public location etc.

Lack of memory of the exact date while at work.

Now at home and checking my records it was a 1907 low relief in ms62 condition. (nothing sinister about the **).

I've had some good experiences. Sold five bicycles that were just taking up space a couple months ago. Rented out a couple of my apartments - seems the only place people are looking for apartments to rent. I also bought one large lot of coins which included about $75 in face of silver including a bunch of dollars and eagles. The collection had about 50 large cents, granted nothing in great shape with about a third that were total culls. There was also another $50 in an unsearched bag. After I pulled a nice 1805 half cent out of there I had to believe it was probably unsearched. I met him in a public place and paid a decent price. I had the guys phone number and he seemed ok. I've never had a bad transaction but you do have to be careful.

Friend claims he found a housekeeper. He says she doesn't know the first thing about cleaning house.

The big danger with CL is that because it is mostly local dealing, people show up to a meet with cash (or coins) and get mugged.

now you`ll have to get on CL and see if you can find a good trolling motor for $75
