For some reason Id like to get a spanish milled dollar. Can anybody give me a light and breezy overview on them? Prices, average grades, problems with fakes etc etc.

I'd also like to get one. Those are one of the few coins you can get dated 1776 and know it might have circulated in the colonies during the first American revolution.

How much can one expect to pay for an average-circulated example? Is counterfeiting a problem with these?

Here's a winner and a good starter selection:

It was in my personal collection until I upgraded.

Here's a crusty one from the internet:

Most are cleaned and ugly. Look for one that has some originality.

The CRO guys usually have these in their EB list, so if this one does not suit you, ask CCU if he has any others.

If you are really interested in foreign coins that circulated in the colonies and early federal period, get a copy of Will Nipper's book, "In Yankee Doodle's Pocket: The Myth, Magic and Politics in Early America.

I saw one for $85 at the Mount Vernon gift shop two years ago. It was worn and cleaned. Call before you go to make sure it is still there. image

Now there's a recipe for future regret.

I agree with RYK's recommendation of CRO / CCU.

Don't forget the Mexican coins from the 1820 - 1840 period - they're very historic and likely circulated here, too.

You should ask over on the Darkside - you'll probably get some really good answers

  • ambro51 - this is a surprise. I figured you would be a half escudo type.
By the way were any ever minted in the Western Hemisphere. Seems like all I have seen or heard of were from the Madrid mint.

Take a look at the coins pictured in this thread- they were all made in Mexico.

edited to add... well, all of them posted *before* I wrote this, anyway. image

Cheap way is to buy a 2 or 4 reales instead of a 8.
This one was minted in Peru.

Britain stamped the head of King George III on captured Spanish 8 Real coins so they could circulate in Britain resulting in the popular saying:

To make the dollar of Spain
    for 5 Shillings pass,
stamp the head of a fool
on the neck of an ass.

Did someone mention 1/2 E? image

Cheap way is to buy a 2 or 4 reales instead of a 8.

My minimal experience in this area suggests that, for some reason, the pillar 4R is the most expensive denomination.

Given his penchant for small coins, the 1/2 R might be ambro's best bet, and they seem to be the least expensive.

There were about 20 examples from Mexico and 5 or 6 Peruvian ones in the recently closed Heritage World Coins auction. All condition ranges were available - both slabbed and raw. I picked up what looks like (we'll see when I get it in hand) a nice, lightly toned 1754 Peru in solid XF to add to my dollar type collection. Everything went for more than I expected (based on my research). I got outbid on about 5 slabbed ones and finally ended up with the Peruvian one. Anyway, the auction results should give you a good idea of what's out there and what they are currently going for.

And as someone mentioned earlier, Sedgwick Coins has a nice selection of old Spanish coins of the colonial era. There are quite a few nice cobs of all denominations available for reasonable prices.

There is a great story that goes with this concerning the politics of the Louisana Purchase. Bottom line of the story is that if the ship hadn't sunk, people west of the Mississippi would be speaking Spanish now (not that they don't now).

My experience agrees with RYK in that the 4R appears to be the toughest to obtain and is the most expensive when found.

Here is one that I have had laying around forever. On the reverse up on the crown is a very deep stamp. Very different than the other chops.

Crypto79 and Fairlaneman have original 1804s that were minted in that year. Where they circulated in the US, maybe this is the reason that Jefferson stopped production of US dollars.

Gonna have to agree here. Wasn't the 1/2 escudo equivalent to a gold dollar?

Edit: And I guess I'll throw my 1804 in for good measure:

The pillar dollar of the 18th century is very interesting to me, and I just want a nice specimen, a raw one with a good amount of wear. I found a good candidate on ebay, and it has a tenative RYK 'seal of approval' even with an old cleaning. Providing the price dosent shoot up like a rocket, its coming here.

The little gold spanish gold coins in this thread, they are neat and all...but not what Im focused on at the moment.

  • << By the way were any ever minted in the Western Hemisphere. Seems like all I have seen or heard of were from the Madrid mint. >>

I meant this to refer to the gold half escudo only which is gold dollar size.
There is one pictured (enlarged) elsewhere in this thread and it too is the Madrid mint (crown over M).
