Reserve not met........

I was the high bidder on an item, but the reserve was not met. Ebay will not bid anymore than what the next bid would be, even if it doesn't meet the reserve. I had a much higher bid it wouldn't go any higher once I outbid the last bidder.

I hate reserve auctions.

I don't think that will work if you are using a snipe program.

No it does not show. I had the same experience this past week. Bid .99 and seller had a reserve.
My bid was actually $30 but only .99 shows up as I'm the only bidder (first and only bidder). I do
believe that he would have sold it for $30. Since I was the only bidder I didn't make the reserve.
As it was, I emailed him and told him that is what happened and gave him my non ebay email. He
contacted me and we made a deal for $26!

Unless ebay has changed, if your MAX bid is EQUAL TO, or HIGHER THAN, the reserve bid, then it should move there and show the bid.
If your bid is still LESS than the bid, then it will stay at the lower bid and not move up (ie....99c auction start and you are the only bid so it stays at 99c) until, and unless, someone else places a bid.

Now, as for the sniping and reserve auctions, I would imagine it's the same, but since I try not to bid on reserve auctions, I don't know.

This information is correct, including the part about a sniping utility...it just places your bid in the final moments, nothing more.

When this has happened to me I sometimes write to the seller and tell him what my max bid was and ask him to contact me if he is interested in selling around that price.

I think I can disagree- reserve auctions are really needed for certain itmes with a thin market.

I see no harm in asking the seller what the reserve is and if they are not willing to share that, they may at least provide you with their thoughts as to what they see as the auction estimate. If they are not willing to at least provide an auction estimate so you can determine what you think is appropriate- then you might be better off not bidding at all

Instead of setting a reserve, sellers should start auctions at their minimum acceptable price. There is only one advantage I have seen to setting a reserve:

Normally when you start an auction at .99 (to enjoy cheap listing fee) and you have a buy it now price, the buy it now option disappears with the first bid. By also including a reserve in this scenario, the buy it now does not dissappear until the reserve is met.

If I fail to meet reserve, I ask Seller their best price, usually works out for me.

I can tell you from experience that if you bid MORE than the reserve, the reserve price become's the high bid. No if's and's or but's.

If your snipe was not up to what the reserve amount was set at, you'll not win.

If your snipe exceeded the reserve, then you're in the game.

Example: I have an item starting at $250 with a $275 Reserve.

If someone comes along and bids $250, then the bid registers buyt the reserve is not met. If that someone went ahead and bid their max, say $500, the bid would not jump to the initial value of $250 but would jump to the reserve value of $275.

I always ask sellers what there reserve amount is, that way, I'll know what my minimum bid must be in order to at least have a chance. If the reserve is beyond what I'll pay, I just don't bid. If the seller doesn;t divulge the reserve, I don't bid.

some sellers are under the mistakin assumption that divulging the reserve price will give you "an unfair advantage" which I think is hooie since if this "unknown" value is never met, their item ain't gonna sell. It's not like eBay is a REAL auction house where folks get in there and bid.

For that matter, eBay is the weirdest venue for handling reserve amount's anyway since it does not bid for the seller (like Teletrade does). eBay should be setup to bid upto 1 bidding increment below the reserve price since if nobody makes the next bid, the item doesn't sell. As it sits, if seller's have a reserve, because the way eBay is set up, nobody bid's and nobody wins except eBay with their listing fee's regarding reserves.

I'm with Lee....I always ask the seller. If it's something you are interested in, what harm can it do? It can also benefit the seller to reveal it, as it just may allow the item to get sold, as opposed to languishing in the 'unsold' column. Benefits both seller and buyer (as long as the reserve isn't crazy high. As a matter of fact, I did just that a few days ago. Seller offered to sell me the coin if I met his reserve, which I did. Paid immediately. Two hours later, seller asked if I wanted to buy the same coin (date/MM/variety) one grade higher, for only $50 more. JUMPED on THAT one...just fell into my lap due to a simple question. It helps to communicate.

In regard to which coins I bought....the original coin was an MS63, for $100 (had $55 in 'ebay bucks', so the original coin cost me $45)....second was MS64 for $150. Thats all I'll mention for now, until I get the coins in-hand (we've seen what discussing possible rips BEFORE coins are in hand can lead to). IF these cross to our hosts plastic, it will be a MAJOR score. Even if they get bumped down a point, it will still result in a very very nice profit....and the grading will be my freebies, so on top of the cos

If you follow the majority of my postings, you might be able to figure out what I was able to pick up at bargain prices. When I get them, I'll ressurect this thread, or just start another one.

All due to simply asking the seller what his reserve was. If it was outrageously high, no great loss, but as it turned out.....it was the best 'ask seller a question' I ever asked!!!

Like others said, the reserve was higher than your max bid. I have won reserve auctions where the underbidder was way under my winning bid because my bid met the reserve.

I put up what I thought was a reasonable bid all thinks considered. I bid between MS64 and MS65 (over $400) money and apparently didn't hit the reserve. I was reluctant to go much higher considering the photos and the lack of recent sales by the seller.

I did email the seller after the auction ended and have yet to recieve a response.

He probably wanted 65 money for it. Might be worth it, but hard to tell from such a tiny pic of the coin.

His reserve was more than likely $500+ which is why your high bid did not register.

On eBay, if you are the very first bidder on a .99 cent starting reserve auction and your bid exceeds the reserve, the first bid gets registered as the reserve amount, not .99 cents.
Always ask sellers what their reserves are and if they do not respond either forget it or just bid your max and move on.

Strange that the seller has only 17 feedbacks, and no action as seller in over 2 years, OR as a buyer in 1 1/2 years...perhaps it's a good thing you didn't win this coin.
